The exhibition, Philadelphia Revealed: Unpacking the Attic, is a large, interactive display of over 600 authentic objects, telling the story of Philadelphia’s city history collection. Inspiring pride in our great city, this major exhibition reflects 350 years of Philly history. The exhibition highlights the strengths of the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University (former Philadelphia History Museum), including material representing the Atwater Kent Museum’s earliest acquisitions, eclectic collections it absorbed, national celebrations, development of the city and civic history, Philly sports, salvaged material and relics, manufacturing and retail, and art and music. The Collection grew over 80 years to encompass an array of Philadelphia stories: objects reflect the city’s diverse residents and their contributions over three centuries. Along with 600+ artifacts, the exhibition includes hundreds more historical images as well as multimedia and hands-on elements.

Philadelphia Revealed will run through Sunday, April 6, 2025, in the Fisher Brooks and Frances M. Maguire Galleries at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), in the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building at 128 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia.

Operating hours are Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Check PAFA website for holiday hours)

Admission will be waived for anyone with a Drexel ID.

Share Your Story

Visitors to the exhibition can find and share their own stories through an interactive game developed by First Person Arts. Philadelphia history is still being told. Philadelphia Revealed aims to find out what these objects mean to all of us. First Person Arts is a nonprofit organization that believes everyone has a story to tell. We tell them in different ways, but they are all part of our collective history. Visitors of all ages can pick a booklet—with three storytelling themes to choose from—that will guide them to find and tell their story. At the end, they can add it to the First Person Arts story archives.

PAFA will host additional Education programs and Events in conjunction with Philadelphia Revealed.

Listen to the Podcast

Visitors can hear other Philadelphians’ stories through The Philadelphia Revealed Podcast, produced by WHYY in partnership with Rowhome Productions. Hosted by Jamie J. Brunson of First Person Arts, each episode features a new storyteller highlighting an object from the exhibition and sharing their own story inspired by it. A turnstile from Veterans Stadium, a hat worn by Abraham Lincoln, handcuffs that may have held abolitionist John Brown—these are just a few of the treasures highlighted. We think everyone will be able to see themselves in the Collection—and that learning about Philadelphia’s many histories can help us understand its present…and future. Court interpreters make a difference in the lives of those they interpret for by removing language barriers and ensuring that justice is accessible to everyone. Qualified candidates with advanced language skills are needed to ensure that persons with limited English proficiency and those who are deaf or hard of hearing have effective access to our courts. If you are bi-lingual or multi-lingual and this sounds interesting to you, come learn more! This is a great part-time job while enrolled in classes, and Natalia Petrova and Mary Provencal-Fogarty who run the program for the State of Pennsylvania will share more details about the program, the orientation and certification process, and answer any of your questions. This is open to all Drexel students. Please join the Drexel University community as we gather to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Banu Onaral, a pioneering biomedical engineer, visionary academic leader, and global innovator, who passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, at the age of 75.

The memorial service will include remembrances from colleagues, students, and family members, highlighting her pioneering contributions to biomedical engineering and her profound impact on countless lives.

We wanted to inform you that Aspiring Physician Executives (APEX) will be planning DUCOM's second annual Diversity in Medicine Symposium during Diversity Week on Friday, January 24th 2025 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. This event will include judges for those presenting their work, food, and prizes with certificates for the three highest scoring presenters, which will be announced at a later date. Below you will find information regarding deadlines and formatting for your materials. If your poster is not submitted online by the date listed below, your poster may not be considered for receiving a prize. All research types are accepted but abstracts that are adherent to the topic of the symposium (i.e. Business, Social Determinants of Health, Health Equity, Community Health, Translational Research, Clinical, etc.) are prioritized for acceptance to present. Note: The Diversity in Medicine Symposium planning committee is working to provide a virtual space where you and your team's work can be preserved to showcase the accomplishments of Drexel students.
