Exhibition from September 13, 2021 through December 23, 2022. The Peck Gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11-4pm, except holidays.

Frank Furness’ 1876 Centennial National Bank, located at the crossroads of Market and 32nd Street, marks the gateway to the Drexel University campus. Now the Paul Peck Alumni Center, it is home to a newly renovated gallery space designed to showcase Drexel’s rich and diverse collections. These collections, which embody the interdisciplinary collaborative spirit of Drexel academics mark Drexel as one of the great collecting universities in the United States.

Though widely known for innovation, entrepreneurship and civic engagement, Drexel has been a serious collecting institution from its very inception in 1891. In fact, it was the University’s forward thinking founder AJ Drexel, who provided the inspiration and resources to establish The Drexel Collection. The original collection grew and evolved over the years and now the University holds a series of impressive collections including the internationally renowned Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, The Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection as well as The Legacy Center, which documents the role of women in American medicine, and the Archives at Hagerty Library.

The inaugural exhibition in the new gallery, curated by Cara Fry and Derek Gillman, is designed to provide a window into Drexel’s extraordinary collections which range from rare books to couture; from natural science to fine and applied arts. Every piece in the show is a treasure – including a Rittenhouse Orrery clock from 1873, a 1991 James Galanos evening gown, a 450 million year old slab of fossilized trilobites and a 16th century Paracelsus incunabulum. Also highlighted is an 1876 William Morris textile which serves as a fascinating case study for the way in which the objects in the Drexel collections invite interdisciplinary teaching and research and thereby provide historical context and contemporary relevance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Join the Mathematics Department Colloquia for a lecture with Professor Marcelo Aguiar of Cornell University.

Dinner will follow the discussion with Professor Aguiar.

Abstract: A result due to Joyal, Klyachko, and Stanley relates free Lie algebras to partition lattices. We will discuss the precise relationship and interpret the result in terms of the braid hyperplane arrangement.

We will then extend this result to arbitrary (finite, real, and central) hyperplane arrangements, and do the same with several additional aspects of classical Hopf-Lie theory. The Tits monoid of an arrangement, and the notion of lune, play central roles in the discussion. All from joint work with Swapneel Mahajan.

Title:
Digital Health and Innovation – From Lab to IPO

Speaker:
Jiwu Zhang, PhD
Founder and Lead Director, TeraHealth Investment
Founder and Chairman, Sunhealth Digital Health
Founder and Chairman, EZ Lab LLC
Visiting Professor, Drexel University
Adjunct Professor, Oakland University

Details:
The biggest contemporary problem of our healthcare system is that we are spending more and more money while the life expectancy does not increase proportionally. Multiple studies have shown that the U.S. spends more per capita on health care than any country in the world, yet it ranks poorly on health care access and outcomes compared to other high-income countries. Clearly, progress is needed so that more people can achieve better health. (Brookings)

Digital health in today, just like the steam engine to Industrial Revolution in 17th, is the driver of the next revolution in healthcare rather than mere tool. Digital health is enabling the transition from medical to health-centered health system. It is thus used to improve health outcomes and equity.

Health technology innovation and emerging healthcare solutions are poised (as a cornerstone of digital health) to affect this fundamental change. This transformation is achievable by directing scientific and engineering research target societal needs or problems.

There are many factors that influence successful commercialization. A primary condition is to correctly address customer requirements. Major questions that need to be addressed are identification of customer needs and determination of the specific requirements. Traditional researchers are not often familiar with the required market analysis.

While developing a specific solution that presents technical difficulty and commercialization challenges, it is critical to be embedded in an effective innovation ecosystem. As a technology reaches the end-user, its usability creates greatest customer value.

Dr. Zhang has a proven track record of more than 23 years in the field of digital health and medical technology and product development as a scientific researcher, innovator, entrepreneur, and investor that spanned academia and industry. In this seminar, he will share his knowledge, expertise, and experiences to address the questions raised above.

Biosketch:
Jiwu Zhang, PhD, is renown as a successful entrepreneur with strong a academic background in biomedical engineering. He gained extensive experience in the field of medical technologies and digital health across both academia and industry.

Dr. Zhang is currently an investor and founder of a number of of digital health and deep medtech companies in US, Canada and China. From 2013 to 2020, he was the founder and CEO of Meehealth, a successful digital health company that became the top clinical information system provider in Chinese healthcare market. He developed strategic partnerships with companies and hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He successfully exited when the company was acquired by a listed company.

Previously, Dr. Zhang served as the general manager of global R&D center for Carestream (formerly Kodak Health Group) for 10 years. He founded the global R&D center and led its evolution to a center of excellence for Carestream. He grew the R&D team to around 400 engineers, leading 46% of Carestream global R&D team.

Dr. Zhang’s professional career began in 1998, as the CTO of NEUSoft digital medical system Co. Ltd. (the first listed medtech company in Shanghai exchange market). During this period, the product line of NEUSoft doubled every year. The revenue of company grew 100% every year.

Throughout his career, Dr. Zhang kept his interests and connection with academia. He was associate professor at Northeastern University, China, and a Professor in the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In addition, he served as an adjunct professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University and Beijing University. He is currently an adjunct professor at Oakland University and visiting professor at Drexel University. He is dedicated to coaching and supporting deep medtech commercialization in universities.

Dr. Zhang is passionate about translation of scientific research results and discoveries into commercialized healthcare solutions. He is committed to extract scientific questions from customer journey and to determine requirements that inform the scientific research effort to align with the business use cases.

Drexel is excited to offer its first study abroad opportunity in Aruba! This two-week Intermediate Production course is designed to give students the opportunity to study and shoot within a foreign culture, to allow them to experience a world whose socio-economic background is quite distinct from their own, and to provide the challenge of capturing some aspect of it within a documentary film. It will be run in partnership with EICTV (Escuela International de Cine y Television), the pre-eminent film school for all of Latin America. Students will experience Aruba's rich and vibrant cultural history, learn about its history of cinema and produce a documentary film.

As this is an intermediate course, Documentary Studies (FMTV 250) is a pre-requisite; this can be waived but only with the express permission of the professor. It is assumed that students will have developed the basic skills required to make a meaningful documentary, from research to conception with an understanding of documentary approaches, to field production and post-production. During production, camera work and sound will be captured by student crews, working with professional Aruban Producers, who are multi-lingual. Importantly, crews will also be comprised of other students from Latin American and the Caribbean, providing a rich multi-cultural learning experience.
