Support for Pursuing Public Service Careers: Truman Scholarship Information Session (10/4/2023)

This session will cover the eligibility rules, selection criteria, nomination requirements, and application process for the Harry S Truman Scholarship. The Truman provides up to $30,000 towards graduate education, as well as career development opportunities, for undergraduate juniors committed to careers in public service leadership, such as government, public policy, advocacy, or research. You must be a US Citizen or US National to apply; a university nomination is required. Learn more at truman.gov.

Electrified: 50 Years of Electric Factory (10/4/2023)

The exhibition is from September 22 through December 30, 2023. Wednesday - Friday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. A major exhibition celebrating the impact of Philadelphia-based Electric Factory and Electric Factory Concerts, from the late 1960s to the 2010s.

This unmissable exhibition will include original posters, photographs, and concert apparel. An American invention, the electric guitar is the signature instrument of rock and visitors will be drawn to Bruce Springsteen’s Fender Telecaster, played in Philadelphia more than any other celebrated guitar; the 6-string bass Jack Bruce used to record Fresh Cream, painted in psychedelic colors for Cream’s 1968 European and US tours; and a late 1950s Gibson Les Paul, regarded by some as the holy grail of electric guitars, played by Mick Taylor at the Spectrum during the Stones’ tour in 1972.

The exhibition includes sections on the early years of Electric Factory, Live Aid, concert sound systems (with a scaled-down stage), the 2nd Electric Factory, and the psychology of rhythm which underlies so much music. An interactive section will close the show, inviting guests to decorate guitars virtually.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Details:
Dr. Andres Kriete and Jay Bhatt will discuss and review the definition and examples of ethics, plagiarism, and cheating. Drexel policies and School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems policies will also be explained. These policies affect all faculty, students, staff, and any Biomed community members.

Biosketches:
Andres Kriete, PhD, is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Teaching Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at Drexel University. Dr. Kriete received training in computational biology in academic, clinical and industrial environments and joined Drexel University in 2003. His research interests include cell aging, skin cancer, computational modeling, aging pathways, and is a collaborating partner in the Aging Initiative at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Jay Bhatt, Librarian for Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University Libraries, is responsible for building library collections in biomedical engineering and engineering subject areas, in outreach, and in teaching information and research skills to faculty, researchers, and students. He provides individual and small group consultations, research support to faculty and students, and conducts instructional sessions for different classes as requested by faculty members. He is passionate about participating in conversations and raising awareness about Academic and Research Integrity, Open Access, Open Data, and Open Educational Resources in Engineering, amongst faculty and students.

DK Osseo-Asare is a Ghanaian American designer who makes buildings, landscapes, communities, objects, and digital tools. He is a co-founding principal of the transatlantic architecture and integrated design studio, Low Design Office (LowDO) based in Austin Texas, and Tema, Ghana. Osseo-Asare is also an associate professor of Architecture & Engineering Design at Pennsylvania State University where he directs the Humanitarian Materials Lab. The recipient of many international awards and recognitions, Osseo-Asare lectures around the world and his designs and research are widely published. Osseo-Asare’s innovative material assemblies are optimized for massively scalable radical resilience with low carbon energetics that bring life into balance for people and place. Pierce the veil of night on Wednesday, October 4 from 7-9pm at Drexel University’s Lynch Observatory. Engage in an out of this world telescopic experience during the observatory’s monthly public night. Weather permitting, public night viewing sessions take place on the roof of Drexel’s Main Building under the direction of Gordon Richards, Professor in the Department of Physics.
