In 15 bodies of work and over 70 pieces, Bond chronicles wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Kavanaugh hearings, the Syrian refugee crisis, drone warfare, the 2nd amendment and gun violence... the list goes on. While her content is inherently provocative, she does not force her audience to come to a particular decision. Rather, she uses her studio practice as a method to understand these conflicts on a personal level. She spends several months on each piece, often years on series that document US history as it develops in real-time. At its core, each piece is a long-form meditation, a physical manifestation of Bond’s attempts to understand her personal relationship to the major events of our time. The resulting message is not any discovery or opinion the artist uncovers while engaging with the source material; the message is to engage with the information for yourself. The fact that Bond’s work is incredibly beautiful helps accomplish this goal. The sensitivity of her mark-making and craftsmanship invites the viewer to linger on subjects that may otherwise alienate or repulse. Errors and Omissions provides a recent historical context from which we can explore and engage with our current political placement. It asks us again the classic questions of humanity- who are we, where did we come from, where are we going– and am I OK with it?

Exhibition from June 30, 2022 through December 23, 2022. The Peck Gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11-4pm

Frank Furness’ 1876 Centennial National Bank, located at the crossroads of Market and 32nd Street, marks the gateway to the Drexel University campus. Now the Paul Peck Alumni Center, it is home to a newly renovated gallery space designed to showcase Drexel’s rich and diverse collections. These collections, which embody the interdisciplinary collaborative spirit of Drexel academics mark Drexel as one of the great collecting universities in the United States.

Though widely known for innovation, entrepreneurship and civic engagement, Drexel has been a serious collecting institution from its very inception in 1891. In fact, it was the University’s forward thinking founder AJ Drexel, who provided the inspiration and resources to establish The Drexel Collection. The original collection grew and evolved over the years and now the University holds a series of impressive collections including the internationally renowned Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, The Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection as well as The Legacy Center, which documents the role of women in American medicine, and the Archives at Hagerty Library.

The inaugural exhibition in the new gallery, curated by Cara Fry and Derek Gillman, is designed to provide a window into Drexel’s extraordinary collections which range from rare books to couture; from natural science to fine and applied arts. Every piece in the show is a treasure – including a Rittenhouse Orrery clock from 1873, a 1991 James Galanos evening gown, a 450 million year old slab of fossilized trilobites and a 16th century Paracelsus incunabulum. Also highlighted is an 1876 William Morris textile which serves as a fascinating case study for the way in which the objects in the Drexel collections invite interdisciplinary teaching and research and thereby provide historical context and contemporary relevance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In the midst of upheaval, higher education institutions attempt to respond. Despite racism and inequity not being new topics, the cultural confrontation with police brutality, violence against marginalized communities, and systemic racism in 2020 led to forums, panels, committees, and dialogues being held at institutions across the country. Task forces examined and evaluated policies, made recommendations, and now, some argue, institutions are expected to reframe the curriculum for inclusivity. For others, this is a topic that has been overstated and that oversight by diversity administrators is impeding the freedom of faculty to teach their subjects freely and in the fashion they wish.
Title:
When Nano Meets Neuro: Engineering High-Resolution Neuroelectronics From Nanoscale Soft Conductors

Speaker:
Flavia Vitale, PhD
Assistant Professor
Center for Neuroengineering and Therapeutics
Departments of Neurology, Bioengineering,
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
University of Pennsylvania

Details:
Neuroelectronic technologies are enabling paradigm-shifting approaches to treating neurological disorders, restoring and repairing lost functions, and modulating neural circuitry to control mood and behavior. Conventional neuroelectronic interfaces rely on metals and silicon, which are expensive to source and process, and are intrinsically inadequate to address the mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties of neural tissues. Thus, the realization and successful clinical translation of safe, biocompatible, and long-term stable neuroelectronic interfaces require significant innovations in materials and fabrication strategies.

In this talk, I will first briefly review the main classes of neurotechnologies for treating neurological disorders as well as brain-computer interfaces for restoring lost motor and sensory functions. Then, I will present ongoing work in the Vitale Lab on the development of novel neural interfaces enables by nanomaterials. Specifically, I will discuss how nanoscale soft conductors like MXenes can be engineered into high-resolution, minimally invasive neuroelectronic interfaces designed to seamlessly map and control the activity of neural circuits at multiple scales. Then, I will present ad hoc, scalable, rapid manufacturing processes designed to translate the exceptional material properties at the molecular scale into high-resolution, low impedance neuroelectronic interfaces that are also compatible with clinical neuroimaging modalities, such a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT). Finally, to illustrate the potential of these novel neuroelectronic interfaces based on MXenes, I will present different examples of applications in both implantable and wearable devices.

Biosketch:
Flavia Vitale, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Neuroengineering and Therapeutics at the University of Pennsylvania, and in the Departments of Neurology, Bioengineering, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She is also a core faculty member of the Brain Science, Translation, Innovation, and Modulation Center at Penn and of the Center of Neurotrauma, Neurodegeneration & Restoration at the Philadelphia VA. Dr. Vitale earned her BS and MS in Biomedical Engineering at the Università Campus Biomedico di Roma in 2008, and in 2012 she received her PhD in Chemical Engineering at the Università di Roma “La Sapienza”. She completed a postdoctoral training in Chemical Engineering at Rice University, a Neuroengineering training at Penn, and in 2018 she joined the Penn faculty.

Dr. Vitale’s research interests are in the area of advanced neuroelectronic interfaces for studying, diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous and neuromuscular systems. Her lab integrates neuroengineering, materials science, electrical engineering, and neuroscience approaches to develop novel neuroelectronic interface technologies and apply them to both basic science and fundamental studies of neural functions and disease. The ultimate goal of the Vitale Lab is to translate these innovative technologies and scientific knowledge to patient care and improve outcomes.

Dr. Vitale has published more than 36 peer-reviewed journal articles, 2 book chapters, 36 conference abstracts, and is a co-inventor on six (6) US and international patent applications.

In recognition of her research achievements, Dr. Vitale has received a number of awards, including the Taking Flight Award from Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy, the McCabe Fellow and Linda Pechenik Investigator Awards from the University of Pennsylvania, the iCANX Young Scientist Award, and the K12 Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Engineering Career Development Award from the NIH.
