The exhibition, Philadelphia Revealed: Unpacking the Attic, is a large, interactive display of over 600 authentic objects, telling the story of Philadelphia’s city history collection. Inspiring pride in our great city, this major exhibition reflects 350 years of Philly history. The exhibition highlights the strengths of the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University (former Philadelphia History Museum), including material representing the Atwater Kent Museum’s earliest acquisitions, eclectic collections it absorbed, national celebrations, development of the city and civic history, Philly sports, salvaged material and relics, manufacturing and retail, and art and music. The Collection grew over 80 years to encompass an array of Philadelphia stories: objects reflect the city’s diverse residents and their contributions over three centuries. Along with 600+ artifacts, the exhibition includes hundreds more historical images as well as multimedia and hands-on elements.

Philadelphia Revealed will run through Sunday, April 6, 2025, in the Fisher Brooks and Frances M. Maguire Galleries at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), in the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building at 128 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia.

Operating hours are Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Check PAFA website for holiday hours)

Admission will be waived for anyone with a Drexel ID.

Share Your Story

Visitors to the exhibition can find and share their own stories through an interactive game developed by First Person Arts. Philadelphia history is still being told. Philadelphia Revealed aims to find out what these objects mean to all of us. First Person Arts is a nonprofit organization that believes everyone has a story to tell. We tell them in different ways, but they are all part of our collective history. Visitors of all ages can pick a booklet—with three storytelling themes to choose from—that will guide them to find and tell their story. At the end, they can add it to the First Person Arts story archives.

PAFA will host additional Education programs and Events in conjunction with Philadelphia Revealed.

Visitors can hear other Philadelphians’ stories through The Philadelphia Revealed Podcast, produced by WHYY in partnership with Rowhome Productions. Hosted by Jamie J. Brunson of First Person Arts, each episode features a new storyteller highlighting an object from the exhibition and sharing their own story inspired by it. A turnstile from Veterans Stadium, a hat worn by Abraham Lincoln, handcuffs that may have held abolitionist John Brown—these are just a few of the treasures highlighted. We think everyone will be able to see themselves in the Collection—and that learning about Philadelphia’s many histories can help us understand its present…and future. Philly Codefest is Drexel University’s annual hackathon open to college students and professionals in the Philadelphia area. Codefest is a free software and hardware hackathon in Philadelphia that encourages students and professionals from all experience levels and backgrounds to work together to develop innovative solutions to help solve real world challenges. No coding experience is requried – just bring your creativity!

Attendees will form teams to work on projects, and then present their final creations to a panel of judges – comprised of Drexel faculty, sponsors, and respected members of the Philadelphia tech community – for a chance to win awesome prizes.

This gentle yoga and breathing class will be a hands-on movement class. Our Wellness Administrator Monica Fauble, Licensed Acupuncturist & Yoga Teacher, will lead you through a series of stretches and breathing practices that can be done at home or in your office.

You will also experience guided breathwork, meditation, and grounding exercises that you can use to destress and reset throughout the day.

You don’t necessarily need to change into “workout” clothes to attend, but you will not be able to fully participate if you are wearing tight or restrictive clothing or clothes that you’re afraid will rip or tear if you stretch and move. Please use your judgment about what to wear.

All bodies and all “fitness” levels are welcome to attend this class. We will offer more do-able and more difficult variations of each posture to help you turn up the heat or take it down a notch according to what you need.

Art making for self-care focuses on the process, not the product! Join us for a 50-minute Zoom session to e experience the inherent ability of artmaking to foster joy and to promote sustainable self-care habits. This session will be led by Denise Wolf, ATR-BC, ATCS, LPC, LPAT, a licensed and credentialed art therapist who is a Associate Clinical Professor in the Masters in Art Therapy and Counseling Graduate Program in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Guided by Denise and undergraduate students studying arts and wellness, participants will be prompted to then engage in non-threatening, arts-based exercises using common household materials. These activities are designed to be portable, accessible, and require no prior artmaking experience. Art making provides a psychological space where empowerment can be experienced and witnessed vis a vis the art itself. For the hands-on person who enjoys creative activity and experiential learning, this is for you!

Drexel’s Department of Criminology and Justice Studies, in collaboration with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, is proud to host a Reentry Simulation event. Attendees will experience a simulation designed to highlight the emotional and practical realities of reentry by completing various tasks that mirror the struggles faced by those recently released from incarceration.

These tasks include complying with probation terms, securing employment, attending treatment programs and managing finances, all within a set amount of time.

This event provides an invaluable chance to learn not just the theories and statistics behind reentry, but to truly understand the lived experience of individuals navigating the complex challenges of reintegration.

Drexel's Medical Cannabis Research Center presents Steph Sherer, Founder and President of Americans for Safe Access (ASA).

Steph Sherer is the foremost international leader and expert on medical cannabis patient advocacy. Sherer is the founder and President of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists, and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research.

Sherer has trained over 100,000 individuals across the country on civic engagement, building a powerful grassroots movement for medical cannabis. Alongside the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) and the American Herbal Pharmacia, Sherer created the first medical cannabis standards in the areas of Distribution, Cultivation, Analytics, Manufacturing, Packaging, and Labeling.

Steph presented on current issues in cannabis legalization, including how the past has shaped the current policy landscape, and how regulators, legislators and activists can preserve medical cannabis in the context of adult-use legalization. She also discussed ASA’s proposed bill to provide an alternative to the rescheduling process.

This workshop provides an overview of domestic violence through a Jewish lens, exploring patterns and barriers in the cycle of domestic abuse generally, as well as specific challenges faced by survivors in the Jewish community. Dinah is nonprofit addressing domestic abuse in the Jewish community of Greater Philadelphia through advocacy, education, and legal representation. Shana Weiner is Kline Law alum (2013) and founded Dinah in 2015, becoming the first program of its kind in Pennsylvania. This workshop is provided through a generous grant from the Office on Violence Against Women, and in partnership with Jewish Women International and Jewish Family & Children’s Services of Greater Philadelphia

Sleep Loss, Proteostasis, and Learning

Details:
Chronic inadequate sleep is widespread in modern societies. Epidemiological studies indicate that chronic short sleep and/or disrupted sleep are all associated with metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular risk, cognitive impairments, and increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Sleep loss also perturbs proteostasis which is critical for cellular function and memory. The direct link between proteostasis, sleep quality, and cognition in aging and disease remain unclear. Our lab investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the interactions between sleep, proteostasis and aging with a focus on mitigating the effects of sleep loss and impaired proteostasis on learning and pathology.

Biosketch:
Nirmala Nirinjini Naidoo, PhD, is a Research Professor in the Division of Sleep Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Her research interest lies in understanding the changes in protein homeostasis (proteostasis) in brain in relationship to sleep/wake control and effects of sleep deprivation. Her work has shown that sleep loss perturbs proteostasis and that during aging chronic sleep disturbances impair proteostasis contributing to neuronal injury. Current research in the lab focuses on the mitigating the effects of sleep disruption and impaired proteostasis to neurodegeneration.

Dr. Naidoo has served on numerous NIH study sections on aging and neurodegeneration, is the chair of the NIH external advisory board for the BENFRA Botanical Dietary Supplements Research Center at Oregon Health and Science University and Oregon State University. She is a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Group, the Institute of Aging and the Chronobiology and Sleep Institute (CSI) at Penn.

Join Drexel FIRST and hear from Adolfo G. Cuevas, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at NYU's School of Global Public Health, and serves as Ddeputy director of the Center for Anti-Racism, Social Justice, and Public Health.

Cuevas research focuses on how discrimination and other psychosocial stressors affect health across the lifespan, employing epidemiological, psychological, and biological approaches to explore these relationships.

For his contributions to research on race, racism, and health, Dr. Cuevas was named one of the National Minority Quality Forum’s 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health and received the Diversity Scholar Award from the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard University.

Join us as we reflect on our journey, milestones, and vision for the future of immersive pediatric care.

Five years ago, amidst the chaos of a tornado and on the cusp of a global pandemic, the founding members of the Yale Center for Immersive Technologies in Pediatrics crossed paths at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. This serendipitous meeting planted the seeds of a pioneering initiative to leverage extended reality (XR) technologies for transformative pediatric healthcare. Today, we celebrate a half-decade of groundbreaking advancements, from virtual reality education to augmented reality clinical tools, aimed at reducing disparities and improving outcomes for youth.

Speakers Bio:

Kimberly Hieftje is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and co-director/co-founder of XRPeds at Yale and the new Yale Center for Immersive Technologies in Pediatrics. For the past 15 years, her research has focused on the development, evaluation, and implementation of health and clinical interventions for youth that utilize XR and game technology. Dr. Hieftje has led teams that have developed game interventions focused on topics including e-cigarette, marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco use prevention, HIV/STI prevention and testing, empowering Black teen girls on their sexual health, bystander intervention, LGBTQ bullying, mental health promotion, and grief/loss of a child. Dr. Hieftje is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Games for Health Journal, the premier journal in the field of serious games for health and clinical applications.

Asher M. Marks, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine and practicing pediatric hematologist and oncologist. He is the director of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology and also serves as the director of the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer program for Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. While his clinical research frequently focuses on the care and treatment of pediatric patients with brain tumors, his role as the director of the AYA program led to the development of and interest in the use of VR for clinical and educational use cases. Along with Kimberly Hieftje, PhD, he co-founded The Yale Center for Immersive Technologies in Pediatrics and the XRPeds lab (xrpeds.org) at Yale Pediatrics.

Tension and stress have a sneaky tendency to build without us even knowing. Most often we don't realize their effects until we give ourselves a minute to relax. In this practice, you'll be guided through self-massage techniques to alleviate knots and tightness to create more space. A great way to unwind and give yourself much needed time to reset and restoration.

You will need one or two tennis balls to complete this practice. And you will also need loose comfortable clothing and space to lie on the floor.

Our instructor, Anisha Chirmule, is an experienced teacher and practitioner of yoga in the Philadelphia area. She has been involved in forms of movement throughout the entirety of her life as a form of physical and mental therapy, and found yoga in 2010. Since 2014, she has completed training in Ashtanga yoga, alignment based yoga, myofascial release therapy and a 500 hour advanced training under the guidance of several prominent Philadelphia based teachers. Throughout different points of her life, the practice of yoga on and off the mat has been a common denominator for Anisha. The line between teacher and student blends in each class she offers, as she loves the shared experience of discovering new potential and deeper understandings of shared universal values. In class, Anisha hopes to leave students with a new expansion of their capacities and maybe a laugh through the process.

Registration is required in Career Pathway. The Zoom link for this webinar will be shared in the email you receive when you register. As long as you are signed into Zoom when you attend (you can confirm that you are signed in by checking that your name appears in the Zoom participants list) you will be marked as having attended and you will receive wellness points six weeks after attending. You will receive a completion email from Career Pathway after attendance for this event has been completed.

Scaling up Ethical Disability & Mental Health Prevention in Minoritized Older Adults (3/12/2025)

Dr. Thalia Porteny is a health policy scholar and applied ethicist whose interests are motivated by the needs she saw growing up in Mexico and working in the Mexican Ministry of Health. Her work aims to better understand the health needs and experiences of vulnerable populations, primarily older adult migrants, to advance fairer patient treatment, allocation, and access to health resources.

As the proportion of minoritized older adults in the U.S. grows, the need for culturally tailored, scalable interventions to prevent disability and improve mental health becomes increasingly urgent.

The Positive Minds–Strong Bodies (PMSB) program, an evidence-based intervention, was designed to address these disparities by integrating mental health and physical strengthening components through community-based organizations (CBOs).

Dr. Porteny's presentation synthesizes findings from two recent studies examining PMSB’s implementation and scalability. Findings emphasize the importance of adapting research methodologies to better serve minoritized older adults while ensuring program sustainability and effectiveness, but these trade-offs must be further discussed and assessed.

Dr. Porteny is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Mailman School of Public Health. She earned her PhD and master's degree in health policy and ethics at Harvard University. She then completed her postdoc training at the lab for Research on Ethics Aging and Community Health (REACH Lab) at Tufts University.

Heidi J. Larson, PhD, is an anthropologist and director of The Vaccine Confidence Project™; professor of anthropology, risk, and decision science, Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; clinical professor, Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington; guest professor at the University of Antwerp, Belgium; and a former fellow at the Chatham House Centre on Global Health Security. Larson previously headed global immunization communication at UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), chaired Gavi’s Advocacy Task Force, and served on the World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (WHO SAGE) Working Group on Vaccine Hesitancy. The Vaccine Confidence Project™ is a WHO Centre of Excellence on addressing vaccine hesitancy.

Larson’s research focuses on the analysis of social and political factors that can affect uptake of health interventions and influence policies. Her particular interest is on risk and rumor management from clinical trials to delivery and building public trust. She is principal investigator for a global study on acceptance of vaccination during pregnancy; an EU-funded project on the deployment, acceptance, and compliance of Ebola vaccines in Africa; and a global study on public sentiments and emotions around current and potential measures to contain and treat Covid-19. She is author of STUCK: How Vaccine Rumors Start—and Why They Don’t Go Away (Oxford University Press, 2020).

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, many feared it meant the end of abortion access in the United States. Yet the dedicated work of people on the ground has allowed abortion to survive post-Dobbs in ways that no one predicted. In After Dobbs, law professor David S. Cohen and sociologist Carole Joffe interview 24 people across all different fields in abortion and in different state political environments to uncover how the abortion providing community and its allies prepared for, and then responded to, changes in the law.

Join us to hear from the authors about what their interviews tell us about abortion provision in the aftermath of Dobbs and how the abortion access landscape in the U.S. may continue to change.

Speakers

David S. Cohen

David S. Cohen is a Professor of Law at Drexel’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law. His scholarship explores the intersection of constitutional law and gender, emphasizing how the law impacts abortion provision, including violence against abortion providers, as well as sex segregation and masculinity. He also researches voting anomalies in the Supreme Court. In the wake of the reversal of Roe v. Wade, Professor Cohen has been one of the leading national experts on abortion.

Cohen’s first book, Living in the Crosshairs: The Untold Stories of Anti-Abortion Terrorism, was published in 2015 by Oxford University Press and co-authored with Krysten Connon, a 2012 graduate of Drexel Kline Law. Cohen’s second book, Obstacle Course: The Everyday Struggle to Get an Abortion in America, was published in 2020 by California University Press and written with Carole Joffe.

Carole Joffe, PhD

Carole Joffe is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and at ANSIRH (Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health) at the University of California San Francisco. Her research focuses on the social dimensions of reproductive health, with a particular interest in abortion provision.

Joffe’s previous publications include Obstacle Course: The Everyday Struggle to Get an Abortion in America (University of California Press) with David Cohen; Reproduction and Society: Interdisciplinary Readings (Routledge Press), co-edited with Jennifer Reich; Dispatches from the Abortion Wars: The Costs of Fanaticism to Doctors, Patients, and the Rest of Us (Beacon Press); Doctors of Conscience: The Struggle to Provide Abortion Before and after Roe v. Wade (Beacon Press); and The Regulation of Sexuality: Experiences of Family Planning Workers (Temple University Press). Besides writing for an academic audience, she also writes frequently for the general public on the topics of reproductive health and reproductive politics, and has published op-eds, blog posts, and letters in such venues as the New York Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, The Hill, and Rewire.

Elizabeth Kukura (Moderator)

Elizabeth Kukura is an Associate Professor of Law at Drexel’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law, where her research focuses on the intersection of gender and health law, with a particular focus on reproductive health and the law and politics of childbirth. Her scholarship examines laws and policies that impact healthcare decision-making and the role of race, class, gender, and sexuality in shaping health care access, experiences, and outcomes. Her scholarship on the maternal health crisis has examined the legal status of midwives in the United States, coerced interventions and other forms of mistreatment by perinatal care providers, and the impact of Dobbs on maternal and reproductive health care.

Violet Whitney – Co-founder at Spatial Pixel
Violet co-leads Spatial Pixel, where she applies expertise in spatial UX.
Prior to co-founding Spatial Pixel, Violet served as director of product at Sidewalk Labs, the Google Future Cities initiative, where she started a generative design product now part of Google Earth. Today, she teaches tangible and spatial computing at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. At Columbia, she helped launch a new Computational Design Masters program. Violet researches new modes of human-computer interaction outside of the screen.

William Martin – Co-founder at Spatial Pixel
William co-leads Spatial Pixel, where he applies expertise in spatial AI, the application of artificial intelligence to spatial reasoning and design. He also teaches a course called “Spatial AI” at Columbia GSAPP. Trained as an architect, he was a lecturer at the Yale School of Architecture, assistant professor at NYIT, and instructor at General Assembly. He served as head of product at Floored, a real estate tech startup that built pioneering VR marketing tools. He was a software engineer at data science startup Ufora, where he built user interfaces and distributed machine learning software. As product lead at Pivotal Software and VMware, he led a product line that automated the scalable deployment of software applications for Fortune 2000 companies that used the Microsoft tech stack, as well as led the R+D partnership with Microsoft Azure cloud. As director of product management at Recycle Track Systems, he built a new product team focused on logistics and sustainability. Most recently, he served as director of artificial intelligence at Consensys, a web3 and blockchain company.

Emil Polyak – Associate Professor at Drexel University
Emil is an associate professor at the College of Media Arts & Design at Drexel University, where he directs the MS in Digital Media program. With a master's degree in Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design from the University of New South Wales, his work explores intersections of science, engineering, and art through research-informed design practice. Polyak investigates computational creativity and emerging technologies to reimagine creative practice and storytelling. His work has been exhibited internationally at museums, festivals, and conferences, including ACM SIGGRAPH, the Smithsonian Institution, and numerous art and design museums.

Noah Norman – Chief of Hard Work Party and Co-Founder and CEO of Third Wave
Noah Norman is an artist, technical director, and Chief of Hard Work Party. He's spent the last 15 years building installations, experiences, and digital objects with complex inner lives. Since 2023, through his startup Third Wave, he's been building next-generation immersive arcade games.

Chair Yoga: Stretches for Office Workers (15 Wellness Points)* (3/19/2025)

This short, accessible workshop will be a hands-on movement class. Our Wellness Administrator Monica Fauble, Licensed Acupuncturist & Yoga Teacher, will lead you through a series of stretches that can be done in a chair, at your desk, in your office, or even at home! You will need a chair (without wheels preferred) and some water. Also be near a wall, as we may stretch against the wall.

You will also experience guided breathwork, meditation, and grounding exercises that you can use to destress and reset throughout the day.

Registration is required in Career Pathway. The Zoom link for this webinar will be shared in the email you receive when you register. As long as you are signed into Zoom when you attend (you can confirm that you are signed in by checking that your name appears in the Zoom participants list) you will be marked as having attended and you will receive wellness points six weeks after attending. You will receive a completion email from Career Pathway after attendance for this event has been completed.

*Participants in our Wellness Incentive Program are eligible to earn 15 points (a $15 credit) for attending this event. You must sign-in to receive credit.

You must register for the Health Advocate Wellness Incentive Program AND complete your annual Personal Health Profile before you will be eligible to receive any payouts. Drexel's College of Computing & Informatics welcomes Dr. Jaime Snyder, MFA, PhD, Associate Professor in the Information School at the University of Washington. Dr. Snyder’s talk will use a series of projects from her Visualization Studies Research Studio (VSRS) to focus on three aspects of Grounded Visualization Design (GVD) inquiry: (1) a speculative co-design methodology for creating non-normative visual encoding systems, (2) an emergent theory of dialectic vision to understand and describe non-professional expertise and vernacular ways of observing and knowing the world, and (3) the potential for grounded visual elicitation to address epistemic burdens in participatory design practices.

The creation of visualizations of personal experiences, from the display of data in fitness apps to community health data dashboards, rarely involves input from the people whose experiences are being represented. GVD is a sociotechnical design research framework for creating speculative visualizations and visual encoding systems in collaboration with those stakeholders. By involving the people who are the source of data in the visualization design process, GVD explores the ways that choices made in the creation of visual representations of data, information, knowledge, and lived experiences can reflect sensemaking practices, values, and priorities. The design artifacts produced through GVD often challenge normative conventions for visualizing data, especially those data that represent personhood, personal experiences, and vernacular ways of knowing.

The Drexel Urban Health Collaborative is honored to host Elizabeth Wrigley-Field, PhD. A sociologist and demographer, she studies racial inequality in mortality in the historical and contemporary United States.

Dr. Wrigley-Field is an associate professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota who specializes in finding comparisons and metrics that illuminate the human meaning of mortality disparities.

She has extensively researched the COVID-19 pandemic in Minnesota, where she also co-founded an award-winning community vaccination organization.

She is also a demographic methodologist, developing models designed to clarify relationships between micro and macro perspectives on population processes.

Back by popular demand, this talk explores the stories told through art in a history collection, featuring pieces and artists currently on display in Philadelphia Revealed: Unpacking the Attic, An Exhibition of the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University. The Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel holds over 130,000 items, including a wide range of art from creators and collectors that offer a unique perspective on Philadelphia’s history. The Inaugural Alex Geisinger Lecture with Richard Revesz: New Challenges for Federal Environmental Regulations – Executive Branch Responses

The Alex Geisinger Lecture Series honors the memory of Professor Geisinger, a leading scholar of environmental law, administrative law, and public policy. Each year the law school will invite a leading scholar in one of these fields to give a talk to the Drexel community. Our speaker for this inaugural lecture, Ricky Revesz, was a mentor of Alex's and is a distinguished environmental law scholar. He is excited to be part of creating this ongoing tribute to Alex's career.

The lecture will begin at 5 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Richard L. Revesz, the AnBryce Professor of Law and dean emeritus at the New York University School of Law, is one of the nation’s leading voices in the fields of environmental and regulatory law and policy. He has published ten books and around 80 articles in major law reviews and journals advocating for protective and rational climate change and environmental policies, and examining the institutional contexts in which regulatory policy is made.
