The Lazarex Cancer Wellness HUB (6/2/2022)

The Lazarex Cancer Wellness HUB is a “safe space” for community members to talk about their health concerns in relation to cancer across the continuum of cancer care and explore their options from prevention through treatment and clinical trials. They will have the opportunity to develop personal relationships with a Cancer Care Companion to overcome social, historical, and cultural barriers for better outcomes and help them feel welcome in an unfamiliar environment.

The Community IMPACT: Conquering Cancer Together program is located in the Lazarex Cancer Wellness HUB on the first floor of the Lindy House.

Exhibition from April 28, 2022 through October 28, 2022. This exhibition in the Rincliffe Gallery at Drexel University's Main Building explores photography’s role within Drexel University and its collections. The show will connect the works of the collections and the work being created at Drexel to the history of photography and its uses. From tourist photography, to photojournalism, to museum documentation, photography’s importance to society and to Drexel will be explored, explained, and celebrated. Curated by Mary Elizabeth Kulesa, photography & art history ’22. Exhibition Design by Julia Thompson, graphic design ’22.

An opening reception will be held on April 28th from 5-7pm in the Rincliffe Gallery & A.J. Drexel Picture Gallery. Please RSVP.

Frank Furness’ 1876 Centennial National Bank, located at the crossroads of Market and 32nd Street, marks the gateway to the Drexel University campus. Now the Paul Peck Alumni Center, it is home to a newly renovated gallery space designed to showcase Drexel’s rich and diverse collections. These collections, which embody the interdisciplinary collaborative spirit of Drexel academics mark Drexel as one of the great collecting universities in the United States.

Though widely known for innovation, entrepreneurship and civic engagement, Drexel has been a serious collecting institution from its very inception in 1891. In fact, it was the University’s forward thinking founder AJ Drexel, who provided the inspiration and resources to establish The Drexel Collection. The original collection grew and evolved over the years and now the University holds a series of impressive collections including the internationally renowned Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, The Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection as well as The Legacy Center, which documents the role of women in American medicine, and the Archives at Hagerty Library.

The inaugural exhibition in the new gallery, curated by Cara Fry and Derek Gillman, is designed to provide a window into Drexel’s extraordinary collections which range from rare books to couture; from natural science to fine and applied arts. Every piece in the show is a treasure – including a Rittenhouse Orrery clock from 1873, a 1991 James Galanos evening gown, a 450 million year old slab of fossilized trilobites and a 16th century Paracelsus incunabulum. Also highlighted is an 1876 William Morris textile which serves as a fascinating case study for the way in which the objects in the Drexel collections invite interdisciplinary teaching and research and thereby provide historical context and contemporary relevance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Middle School Students College and Career Readiness in the Context of Full-Service Community Schools (6/2/2022)

Full-service community schools (FSCS) are reemerging as a school reform approach designed to address multiple determinants of educational disadvantage and often operate in parallel with other educational reforms like College and Career Readiness (CCR) initiatives. The overlap of FSCS and CCR is important, yet they are rarely studied in tandem. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine whether FSCS programming in an urban elementary school extends into students’ middle school performance on CCR indicators compared to a matched sample of non-FSCS students from the same school district. Findings indicate FSCS students (n=54) significantly outperformed their demographically matched non-FSCS peers (n=54) in overall Grade Point Average as well as math and English performance. Findings further highlight that decades of underinvestment in educational spaces, particularly those in areas of concentrated poverty, necessitate whole school reforms intentionally focused on student achievement coupled with other critical areas that influence students’ overall well-being. Non-traditional educational contexts like FSCS meet this call and have demonstrated potential to advance CCR in lasting ways.

We have all experienced tremendous trauma and loss over the past two years and now is the time to focus on developing resilience. Utilizing a framework focusing on safety, emotions, loss, future, and freedom, we will discuss trauma, our triggers, and the stigma around opening up about our trauma. Join a community of compassion and empathy where you can support and be supported in healing from our individual and collective trauma. Peer group sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. from May 10 to June 23.

Exhibition from March 11, 2022 through March 2023. On March 11, the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery in the Main Building will open A New Kind of House, a year-long exhibition celebrating eight years of Writers Room—a university-community literary arts program engaged in creative placemaking and art for social justice. The photography and writing of students and neighbors, displayed alongside and in conversation with pieces from The Drexel Collection, will engage in a rich dialogue about the changing face of our university and surrounding neighborhoods.

Writers Room is a diverse, intergenerational collective of students/alumni, faculty/staff, and neighborhood residents whose work demonstrates a desire for collaborative opportunities in our joint communities. A New Kind of House is created in partnership between Writers Room, ArtistYear and The Drexel Collection. Supported in part by Canon CSA and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. The exhibition is curated by Lori Waselchuk.

June 2-4, 2022 | 8pm | Mandell Theater

Falling In presents special performance of challenging, evocative, cutting-edge dance with leading choreographers in the field. Choreographers include Maria Bauman, Dinita Clark, Meredith Rainey, Caroline O’Brien, Olive Prince, Hassan Syed, Tommie-Waheed Evans, and Ellen Forman Award recipient Emma Girandola. This experience is meant to expand and reward our collective connotations of dance making. You won’t want to miss this exciting lineup!

All audience members must wear a well-fitting face covering indoors regardless of vaccination status. Drexel requests visitors to wear N95, KN85 or KF94 masks, although double masking with a cloth and surgical mask is also permitted. Gaiters or bandanas are not permitted.
