The Philadelphia Challenge (6/23/2025)

Hosted by: Drexel University Libraries, Collections & Archives, with the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences (College of Arts & Sciences) and Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel

This first display of the Library Exhibit Initiative features an assignment from PSY 101 General Psychology (Winter 2024-25). Prof. Eric Zillmer asked students to select a spot in the city that brings them happiness—and visit Philadelphia Revealed, an exhibition from the Atwater Kent Collection.

The Philadelphia Challenge presents students’ reflections on objects from this city history collection, interactive elements, and a Happiness Map display by the Happiness Lab at Drexel. The Library Exhibit Initiative will continue to feature students interacting with Drexel collections and archives.

Public Viewing Hours:

This exhibit is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm. Read the Libraries' visitors page for additional information before coming to the Library.

Members of the public are also encouraged you check the Libraries' hours page before visiting.

Note that the Library may be closed for some holidays and is closed to the public during final exam periods (June 6 - 14 and Dec. 4 - 14).

Curiouser & Curiouser: Beyond the Glass (6/23/2025)

The exhibition runs February 3 through July 18, 2025. Curiouser & Curiouser: Beyond the Glass invites you to explore how personal wonder has influenced public collections.

This exhibition showcases the evolution of collection practices from private cabinets of curiosity to modern public museums. The Drexel Founding Collection was developed through contributions from its founders' personal collections and public works. See how current researchers inform the collecting practices of cultural and science collections.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

URCF Summer Research Computing Workshops: Introduction to the Unix shell (6/23/2025)

The University Research Computing Facility (URCF) is pleased to announce our Summer 2025 workshop series.

The URCF provides support for computational research at Drexel. These workshops are open to all members of the Drexel community, and will be useful for anyone interested in using computation in their research, regardless of discipline. They’re designed to teach the fundamentals of research computing: the Unix shell, programming basics, and how to access and use Picotte (Drexel’s high-performance computing cluster). They’re interactive, so you’ll practice these skills during the workshop using your own computer.

Introduction to the Unix shell

When: Monday, June 23rd, 10am-12pm
What you’ll learn: The basics of interacting with computers using the Unix shell (a.k.a. the command line), which is a foundational skill for all other technical computing. You’ll learn how to manipulate data, automate repetitive tasks, chain programs together to make more powerful workflows, and the basics of shell scripting.
Required background: None, this workshop assumes you’re completely new to research computing.

All workshops will be conducted remotely on Zoom. Some require you to install and setup the relevant software on your computer beforehand. We’ll send setup instructions and Zoom links to the registered participants for each workshop beforehand.

For decades, real-estate developers have had an outsized effect on the trajectory of growth in Philadelphia. And now a new generation of visionaries, deal-makers and builders are following suit, driven by the merging of social impact and bottom-line imperatives.

The Philadelphia Citizen’s Development … For Good, powered by Drexel’s Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation and Fitler Club, is a series of stories and events that smartly delves into the economic and cultural difference that enlightened and intentional real estate development can make in our city.

Mayor Cherelle Parker has promised to build or renovate 30,000 affordable homes during her first term in office. Halfway through her second year, what’s the plan to get there? And how is our national housing crisis informing local solutions? Hear about what’s needed to succeed, what’s working in other cities and which homegrown solutions can ensure every Philadelphian has a home.
