Faculty and students from Drexel University have partnered with Girls Inc. of Philadelphia to offer a unique experiential learning opportunity for middle school girls during the summer. The College of Engineering will 30 girls at the Innovation Studio and in labs and classrooms across Drexel’s campus for a STEM girls summer program. This year, we will run a 4-week program called Eureka! on Drexel's campus from July 8th until August 2nd.

The Eureka! program is an intensive, five-year, STEM based program for rising 8th grade girls that builds their confidence and skills through hands-on opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Utilizing a whole girl approach, the program also incorporates sports and physical fitness, personal development, and college and career readiness. Eureka! broadens girls' future academic and career interests, encourages enrollment in advanced math and science courses, promotes positive risk-taking, and assists girls in developing networks of peers and mentors to support their future endeavors.

During Eureka!, girls gain first-hand knowledge through a variety of exciting and compelling activities that explore the cutting-edge world of STEM through experiences in a college campus environment. With complementary activities in healthy living, social justice, and financial literacy, Eureka!'s approach fosters educational, professional and personal development.

EUREKA! PARTICIPANTS WILL:

Participate in a 4-week summer STEM camp at Drexel University

Participate in exciting field trips

Participate in swimming instruction, sports, and more personal development activities with Penn Athletics

Attend monthly meetings during the school year

Over the years, iForum has discussed topics of identity, diversity, inclusion, and oppression, including immigration, the #metoo movement, segregation, and civil disobedience. This July, we turn inward to explore what these and other diversity, equity, and inclusion issues look like on our own campus. Everyone is welcome to share what you feel are the most pressing issues at Drexel, from food insecurity to discrimination to microagressions. Bring questions and resources for the group as we unpack what happens in our own backyard. The Community Wellness HUB is a place-based, community-driven, health promotion partnership between Drexel University and the residents of Mantua and Powelton Village. The HUB seeks to HEAL the community through preventative care, UNITE the community around better health, and BRIDGE the community to health services and health education programming, while tackling the social determinants that underlie their health disparities. Health education, screening, counseling and referral services are available Tuesdays to Thursdays between 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Additional services include:

In this session, we will explore reactions and natural approaches to conflict, learn how to choose effective strategies for different conflict situations, and apply a classic conflict resolution technique. Participants should come prepared with a personal real-world conflict situation for a brief case exercise.

While primarily for rising juniors, seniors, and alumni who are considering applying to medical or dental school in the summer of 2020 for admission in 2021, anyone is welcome to attend. Preparing to medical and dental school is an involved and long process, and it is important to be ‘ready’ to submit applications in June 2020, the beginning of the application year.

The workshop will provide guidance to students on “assessing their readiness” to apply to medical or dental school and advice on ways to enhance their credentials in preparation for the 2021 application process. Topics to be covered include academic requirements, the importance of patient engagement and community service experience, and recommendation letters.

Note that this workshop will also be repeated sometime in the mid-fall quarter.
