Beyond Literacy: Free Classes for Adults (8/17/2023)

Starting July 10th, Dornsife will be hosting GED prep classes onsite with Beyond Literacy. In order to register, learners need to register with Beyond Literacy via their website, email or over the phone. Since it is the first cycle of classes, we will be accepting new learners throughout July.

Our class times are below. This class is for learners with middle-level math, higher level reading/writing. If a prospective learner scores higher or lower, they may be placed in a class at one their other campuses.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 9-11:30am, 12:30-3pm, and 5:30-7:30pm

Career Bootcamp for Postdocs, PhDs and Grad Students (8/17/2023)

The Steinbright Career Development Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and the Graduate College invite graduate students, PhD students and postdoctoral scholars to participate in an eight-week career boot camp. The bootcamp will meet weekly on Thursday from 10am - 12pm from June 29 to August 17.

The program equips attendees with the skills, resources, and self-assessment information to make informed career choices within and beyond academia. This course is adapted from the pd|hub Collections, an NIH-funded collection of evidence-based practices to support PhD professional development.

What is a city and who is it for? Who decides and who disrupts? The exhibit Seeing Philadelphia spans more than 300 years of Philadelphia history by combining perspectives from the Atwater Kent Collection of 18th-20th century images of city life along with Writers Room's contemporary, post-pandemic views of a diverse, multigenerational community of photographers, who are also writers.

This exhibition is free and open to the public at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts –America's first museum and art school.

Not sure what exactly is the difference better a cover letter, an application essay and a letter of intent? This workshop will help you explore the purpose and importance of a letter of intent in various contexts, including academic applications, professional opportunities, and research proposals. We’ll also cover key elements and structure of an LOI so you can learn the essential components of a compelling letter of intent and discover effective strategies to structure your letter for maximum impact while showcasing your strengths and fit, whether you are pursuing a master’s or a PhD.

Garden Workshop: DIY Bug Spray (8/17/2023)

PHS presents a special garden workshop series this summer! Every other Thursday afternoon this July and August, take a break in the garden to learn about indoor and outdoor plants, relax while doing some garden crafts, and bring home new plants to add to your collection.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to create fresh and seasonal remedies by tapping into your garden’s bounty and make your own insect repellent for those hot, buggy nights. This workshop is free, and all materials will be provided while supplies last.

Bringing It All Together: Editing for the NSF GRFP Merit Criteria (NSF GRFP Workshop 4) (8/17/2023)

The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) provides selected fellows with three years of funding, including a living stipend and tuition funds, to support the research phase of their doctoral degree in STEM, social sciences, or STEM education. The current application cycle is open to US citizens and permanent residents planning to begin a research-focused graduate program in Fall 2024, or who will be in the 1st or 2nd year of a PhD program in Fall 2023.

This final of four GRFP application workshops will help you edit your application for clarity, concision, and relevance to the award criteria. You do not need to have attended the previous workshop to benefit from this one! An in-person version of this workshop will be offered on Friday, August 18. Both sessions of workshop 4 will cover the same material; there is no need to attend both.
