Online Continuing Education Course: Stormwater Planning in the Era of Climate Change (6/24/2020 - 9/2/2020)

We are delighted to offer this new, online, continuing education class "Stormwater Planning in the Era of Climate Change"to be offered at Drexel University during the Summer of 2020. A maximum of 20 professional development hours (PDHs) can be obtained for the $600 registration fee.

While learning the latest science on precipitation forecasting under climate change, students enrolled in the class will work directly with a set of cities and water utilities (or your own existing clients) to develop future design storms based on the latest climate projections.

Incorporating just 10 minutes of healthy activity into your day can add up to a significant difference in your health, wellbeing and quality of life. With that in mind, Human Resources’ A Healthier U Program is encouraging you to participate in our daily “Ten at 10” wellness program for faculty and professional staff. During this era of social distancing, it’s more important than ever that we find ways to maintain meaningful connections to our colleagues. This program addresses that need and also encourages life-sustaining activities that will promote physical and emotional wellbeing.

Supervisors and department heads are encouraged to set a recurring Outlook invite from 10-10:10 a.m., Monday through Friday, and invite their colleagues to participate. Include a link to this website, then check back Monday through Friday to complete the scheduled activity of the day. For larger departments, you might consider organizing activities into groups of 3-10.

If 10 a.m. is a not an ideal time for you or your department, please feel free to tweak the time to meet your needs. We encourage you to participate sometime before lunch if possible, to help you set the tone for your day.

Join the Dornsife COVID-19 Journal Club for a discussion of the paper “A strategy for finding people infected with SARS-CoV-2: optimizing pooled testing at low prevalence" by Leon Mutesa and colleagues from the Rwanda Joint Task Force COVID-19.

Ed Gracely, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, and Hal Chen, MS '22, both from the Dornsife School of Public Health, will discuss the paper, which was uploaded to the MedRxIv preprint server on August 3, 2020. The paper presents a proof-of-concept experiment exploring optimal testing strategies for COVID-19.

Drexel staff, faculty and students are welcome to take part in this discussion.

The Pennoni Honors College would like to invite you to another Shakespeare Read-Aloud for all interested students, staff, faculty, parents, and friends of the Pennoni Honors College. We will be reading and dissecting Antony & Cleopatra.

Years after the assassination of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, one of three rules of Rome, falls in love with Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. When the empire is threatened, Antony is summoned back to Rome, where chaos, war, and grief ensues.

Our aim is to have attendees engage with this great play in whatever capacity they choose. You can come to read or just to listen. There will be no pressure, no judgment, no grades — just the chance to commune together over a great work of literature and provide a little laughter in our present moment.

The reading will resume each Wednesday, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. live on Zoom. The reading will be led by Pennoni Honors College Dean Paula Marantz Cohen, author of the forthcoming Learning Empathy from Shakespeare (Yale UP).

On Wednesday September 2nd, our Green Infrastructure, Climate and Cities seminar will be held online on the topic Exploring Uncertainties in Stormwater Planning in the Era of Climate Change.

Extreme precipitation events are occurring more frequently in many parts of the United States, and the frequency of these events are expected to grow further as the climate warms. These extreme rainfall events have exposed critical gaps in planning when it comes to effective urban stormwater management in a changing climate. Climate scientists have been warning us that we should expect such changes, but there is a mismatch in the information and resources needed by stormwater utilities and engineers, and the information produced by climate scientists.

CCRUN in partnership with MARISA has been surveying the methods and tools being used to bridge this gap. In March, CCRUN and MARISA held a workshop with stormwater utilities in the Northeast and MidAtlantic to discuss best practices and emerging concepts in planning for extreme events and climate change in stormwater management and synthesize the state of the art in extreme precipitation forecasting for inclusion in stormwater planning.

To test out some of these concepts, Drexel University introduced a problem-based learning class for both Drexel students and practicing engineers enrolled for continuing education credits. Students worked with seven different stormwater utilities in Camden, NJ; Baltimore, MD; Frederick, MD; Takoma Park, MD; Washington DC; Charles County, VA; and Richmond, VA to develop future “design storms” that reflect the potential impacts of climate change on stormwater planning. A particular challenge for the students was to synthesize design storms that represent the full range of uncertainty associated with global climate model output, downscaling approaches, seasonal impacts, and other factors. The students will present their work and a case study, followed by a round table discussion with experts in this field.
