University City Campus Clean-up (8/16/2021 - 9/30/2021)

Drexel Real Estate and Facilities will be coordinating the annual University City Campus Clean-up from Monday, August 16, through Thursday, September 30, 2021. This is an opportunity for departments and offices to dispose of obsolete or broken equipment, furniture, and other large, non-hazardous materials.

To participate, please complete the following steps:

Submit a WebTMA work request noting "Campus Clean-up" and providing a description of the items to be removed in the action requested. (Some oversized pieces of equipment and sensitive items may not qualify for the Campus Clean-up and will require special handling for disposal.)
Clearly identify the items to be discarded for Campus Clean-up. Indicate the work order number (FM-XXXXX) on the item/sign if possible.

Items being disposed of from laboratories may not include hazardous waste or dangerous chemicals. For all laboratory hazardous waste, please contact Environmental Safety & Health at 215.895.5891 to arrange a special pick-up.

For items that have residual value but are no longer useful for the University, please contact drexelsurplus@drexel.edu to see if they can be sold through the Surplus Sales program.

The annual Campus Clean-up allows departments and offices on the University City Campus to efficiently dispose of unwanted items while improving the general appearance of our facilities and reclaiming precious space occupied by items that should be discarded.

New Acquisitions: Highlights from The Drexel Collection (9/21/2021)

Exhibition from June 28, 2021, through October 22, 2021. All visitors without a Dragon card must check in for a visitor pass.

The Drexel Collection has been actively collecting since its founding in 1891. The earliest acquisitions were purchases at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893 and donations made by Drexel family members and friends including Anthony J. Drexel, James MacAlister, James W. Paul, and George W. Childs. The collection grew through the 20th century with donations from Drexel family members, faculty, students, alumni, and friends of Drexel University.

This exhibition is a survey of what the Drexel Collection has collected throughout the last four years. With these donations we are able to continuously diversify the collection, as well as expand the collection’s parameters.

This exhibition was curated by Mary Elizabeth Kulesa ’22 as a part of her undergraduate Co-Op. Mary is a Photography and Art History double major and is excited to be working with new photographs added to the Drexel Collection. Special thanks is due to all of the donors who have helped expand the collection.

Doctoral Thesis Defense: Extending Income Measurement and Modeling Options for Injury Epidemiology (9/21/2021)

Join the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Dornsife for the doctoral thesis defense of Janene Brown, MPH, PhD candidate.

Abstract:
Fatal intentional and unintentional injuries significantly impact victims in years of life lost and can traumatize victims’ families and communities. Non-fatal injuries, such as falls, can result in expensive healthcare costs associated with post-fall rehabilitation and treating associated injuries, and there remains a significant racial disparity in rates of fatal motor vehicle accidents, and a lingering racial disparity in homicides, despite decreases in nationwide rates. Income and elements of the built environment in neighborhoods also influence health, including fatal injuries, and further existing health associated inequities. This dissertation will explore the association between income and income inequality with risk of injuries across a set of refinements.

Biography:
Janene earned her MPH from the Dornsife School of Public Health in 2014 and a BA in Health and Societies with a concentration in Epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. Janene’s research interests include the epidemiologic study of gun violence, chronic disease and its relation to the built environment, and the relationship between the use of public assistance programs and health status. Janene is currently a Stoneleigh Foundation Emerging Leader Fellow working with the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention to evaluate the healthcare utilization costs of violently injured patients in Philadelphia and the effectiveness of a hospital based violence intervention on health care and other service sector utilization. Prior to starting her doctoral program, Janene worked in the Research and Evaluation Group of Public Health Management Corporation where she conducted an ongoing evaluation of the Pennsylvania Free Quitline, a smoking cessation service, and rigorous evaluations of sexual health interventions for at-risk youth.

Through March 2022: Seat at the Table Exhibition (9/21/2021)

Women 100, a program of Vision 2020, is hosting "Seat at the Table," an exhibition that commemorates the 19th Amendment — establishing women’s right to vote — and asks 100 years later, “Where are we now?” Visitors will experience the current status of gender equality in the U.S. through 3D infographic furniture.

"Seat at the Table" is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will reopen September 18, 2021. A virtual tour and the multimedia segment of the exhibition are still available. In addition, an educator's guide is available for download for teachers, youth leaders and parents.

When the Kimmel Center reopens, "Seat at the Table" will be presented in the lobby daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., through September 2021.

Frank Furness’ 1876 Centennial National Bank, located at the crossroads of Market and 32nd Street, marks the gateway to the Drexel University campus. Now the Paul Peck Alumni Center, it is home to a newly renovated gallery space designed to showcase Drexel’s rich and diverse collections. These collections, which embody the interdisciplinary collaborative spirit of Drexel academics mark Drexel as one of the great collecting universities in the United States.

Though widely known for innovation, entrepreneurship and civic engagement, Drexel has been a serious collecting institution from its very inception in 1891. In fact, it was the University’s forward thinking founder AJ Drexel, who provided the inspiration and resources to establish The Drexel Collection. The original collection grew and evolved over the years and now the University holds a series of impressive collections including the internationally renowned Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, The Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection as well as The Legacy Center, which documents the role of women in American medicine, and the Archives at Hagerty Library.

The inaugural exhibition in the new gallery, curated by Cara Fry and Derek Gillman, is designed to provide a window into Drexel’s extraordinary collections which range from rare books to couture; from natural science to fine and applied arts. Every piece in the show is a treasure – including a Rittenhouse Orrery clock from 1873, a 1991 James Galanos evening gown, a 450 million year old slab of fossilized trilobites and a 16th century Paracelsus incunabulum. Also highlighted is an 1876 William Morris textile which serves as a fascinating case study for the way in which the objects in the Drexel collections invite interdisciplinary teaching and research and thereby provide historical context and contemporary relevance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Public Safety is offering its virtual, interactive presentation on situational preparedness, “Your Safety Is Our Goal,” once a month from September through December, both at noon and 6 p.m. to accommodate different schedules. To sign up for one of these sessions, please fill out our Qualtrics form and select your preferred date.

At “Your Safety Is Our Goal,” Drexel’s Community Relations Officers will teach you how to be aware of your surroundings, recognize potentially dangerous situations, and keep yourself safe. These tips will encourage you to think and act proactively – to be prepared, not scared.

This short, accessible workshop will be a hands-on movement class. Our Wellness Administrator Monica Fauble, Licensed Acupuncturist & Yoga Teacher, will lead you through a series of stretches that can be done in a chair, at your desk, in your office, or even at home! You will need a chair (without wheels preferred) and some water. Also be near a wall, as we may stretch against the wall.

You will also experience guided breathwork, meditation, and grounding exercises that you can use to destress and reset throughout the day.

You don’t necessarily need to change into “workout” clothes to attend, but you will not be able to fully participate if you are wearing tight or restrictive clothing or clothes that you’re afraid will rip or tear if you stretch and move. Please use your judgment about what to wear.

All bodies and all “fitness” levels are welcome to attend this class. We will offer more do-able and more difficult variations of each posture to help you turn up the heat or take it down a notch according to what you need.

Registration is required in Career Pathway. The Zoom link for this webinar will be shared in the email you receive when you register. As long as you are signed into Zoom when you attend (you can confirm that you are signed in by checking that your name appears in the Zoom participants list) you will be marked as having attended and you will receive wellness points six weeks after attending. You will receive a completion email from Career Pathway after attendance for this event has been completed.

*Participants in our Wellness Incentive Program are eligible to earn 15 points (a $15 credit) for attending this event. You must sign-in to receive credit.

You must register for the Health Advocate Wellness Incentive Program AND complete your annual Personal Health Profile before you will be eligible to receive any payouts. Points for attending these events will be sent to Health Advocate on a monthly basis for the prior month’s activities. There will be a 6-week delay in these points and payouts being distributed. The Pennoni Honors College would like to invite you to another Shakespeare Read-Aloud for all interested students, staff, faculty, parents, and friends of the Pennoni Honors College. We will be reading and dissecting Twelfth Night.

Chaos, confusion, and comedy ensue in Shakespeare's rom-com about a sister and brother shipwrecked and separated, as they find themselves part of interwoven plots full of practical jokes and mistaken identities.

The reading resumes each Tuesday, from 4-5 p.m. live on Zoom. The reading will be led by Pennoni Honors College Dean Paula Marantz Cohen, author of Of Human Kindness: What Shakespeare Teaches Us About Empathy (Yale UP).

Our aim is to have attendees engage with this great play in whatever capacity they choose. You can come to read or just to listen. There will be no pressure, no judgment, no grades — just the chance to commune together over a great work of literature and provide a little laughter in our present moment.
