Tarantulas Opening Weekend

Event Description

When Tarantulas opens to the public on January 30–31, we have a full weekend of eight-legged activities planned for you. Here’s what will be going on at the museum.

Animals of the Academy
11 a.m., 3 p.m.

Learn all about the creatures that call the Academy home and their similarities and differences in this live animal presentation. Meet some furry, feathery, and scaled Academy ambassadors!

Bugs on the Big Screen
1 p.m.

The bugs are ready for their close-up! Check out some awesome arachnids, magnificent mantids, or cool cockroaches in this technology-enabled live show featuring the cast of the live invertebrate collection of the Academy.

O What A Tangled Web They Weave

Did you know that not all spider silk is the same? Different spider species use silk and webs in different ways for survival. Get the straight-up sticky facts about spinnerets, dens, traps, and even spider goats (?!) at this exciting education station.

Spiders 101

How do spiders eat? How do spiders sense their surroundings? Why do spiders captivate our imaginations? Learn the answers to these questions and more at this station featuring information about spider adaptations and spiders in popular culture.

Enjoy a short presentation by an Academy educator featuring a LIVE tarantula! This talk is included with admission to Tarantulas: Alive and Up Close.

Creepy Crawly Crafts

Make your own wearable arachnid accessory or dynamic jumping spider craft to take home.

Live Invertebrate Cart: Arachnid Edition

Use cutting-edge technology to explore the miniature world of everyone’s favorite eight-legged invertebrates at this interactive cart featuring live arachnids.

Spider Story Time in Outside In
2 p.m.

Marty the Moose is back, and this time with a special guest: Octavia the Tarantula! Join the magnificent moose and the adorable arachnid for a special story about how (and why!) spiders are so cool.
