Rape Victims in the Criminal Justice System: Breaking the Adversarial Triangle

Event Description

Ruthy Lowenstein Lazar, a professor of law at the College of Management Academic Studies in Rishon LeZion, Israel, will discuss her current research with Israeli prosecutors who specialize in sexual violence cases. The research examines how criminal law constructs the role, status, experience, and voice of sexual violence victims in the criminal justice system. The interviews reveal the limited power of criminal law in dealing with rape cases, the effect of the adversarial criminal law on victims, and contradictions between prosecutors’ roles as representatives of the state and advocates for victims.
