Times of Reckoning: Confronting the Legacies of Mass Abuse through Transitional Justice

Event Description
This daylong symposium organized by Professor Rachel López and the Drexel Law Review will gather leading scholars and practitioners to explore the diverse contexts in which transitional justice occurs, how transitioning societies memorialize past injustices and the role that foreign courts can play in adjudicating human rights abuses.
 
Justice Richard Goldstone, who will be the keynote speaker, is a pioneer in advancing transitional justice who served as a jurist in South Africa's highest courts and played a key role in the nation's transition from apartheid to democracy. 

Additional presenters will include:

  •  Juan Mendez, former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment and current Professor, American University Washington College of Law
  • Naomi Roht-Arriaza, Distinguished Professor of Law, University of California Hastings College of Law
  • Nelson Camilo Sánchez León, Director of the International Human Rights Clinic and Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law; former Director of Transitional Justice Initiatives at Dejusticia in Colombia 
  • Ruti Teitel, Ernst C. Stiefel Professor of Comparative Law and Co-Director of the Institute for Global Law, Justice & Policy, New York Law School
