CCM Speaker Series: Tabletop Games as Communicative Ecosystems
Start Date: 10/23/2019Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 10/23/2019End Time: 1:30 PM

Event Description
While they are often dismissed as a mere pastime, board games, especially modern hobby games, are mediated forms of communication.

Players talk to one another and send messages via thoughtful game moves. The game creates culturally meaningful positions for players to adopt or deny, and comments on cultural institutions via simulationist rhetorics. These and other communicative moments interact and overlap to form a rich site of mediated communication that is materially distinct from other game forms.

In this presentation, doctoral candidate Greg Loring-Albright will examine the board-game-in-play as a communicative ecosystem, and propose methodologies for studying this phenomenon.
