Discussing how his team, Final Frontier Medical Devices, competed in and ultimately won first place in the Qualcomm Tricorder XPrize for their artificial intelligence-based engine, DxTER, which learns to diagnose medical conditions by integrating learnings from clinical emergency medicine with data analysis from actual patients.

Biosketches:
M. Brian Blake, PhD is Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Nina Henderson Provost at Drexel University. As the highest ranking academic officer, he oversees all academic programs across the 15 schools and colleges and over 26,000 students. Blake came to Drexel from the University of Miami, where he set research and teaching priorities and led faculty enhancement efforts as vice provost for academic affairs, and oversaw 155 graduate programs serving more than 5,700 students as dean of the Graduate School. Previously he was associate dean for research and graduate studies in the University of Notre Dame College of Engineering, and chaired the Georgetown University Department of Computer Science as it launched its first graduate program.

Kapil R. Dandekar, PhD, received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. In 1992, he worked at the U. S. Naval Observatory and from 1993-1997, he worked at the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory. In 2001, Dandekar joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is currently a Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University; the Director of the Drexel Wireless Systems Laboratory (DWSL) ; Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the Drexel University College of Engineering.

Wan Y. Shih, PhD, is a Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health System at Drexel University and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. She received her BS in physics from Tsing-Hua University in Taiwan in 1976 and her PhD in Physics from Ohio State University in 1984. She was a Research Scientist in the Materials Institute at Princeton University and a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University prior to joining School of Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University in 2006. She is a recipient of the American Ceramic Society 1999 Edward C. Henry Electronics Division Best Paper Award.

Hasan Ayaz, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems and in the Department of Psychology at the Drexel University College of Arts and Sciences, a core member of the Cognitive Neuroengineering and Quantitative Experimental Research Collaborative, as well as affiliations at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He received his BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Türkiye with high honors and MS and PhD degrees from Drexel University, where he developed enabling software for functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy based brain monitoring and FDA approved medical devices. His research interests include neuroengineering in human computer interaction and neuroergonomics, as well as clinical and field applications of optical brain imaging.

Basil Harris, MD, PhD, FACEP, is a physician with a doctorate in engineering. He has been actively practicing emergency medicine for over fifteen years, spending the last twelve years at Lankenau Medical Center of Main Line Health. Dr. Harris was named a Top Doctor by Main Line Today in 2016 for the third time. Despite his daily regimen of chaos in the ER, his engineering training is ever present. Dr. Harris' years at Drexel and Cornell Universities hardwired him to think like an engineer and he is a constant tinkerer. He has research experience in medicine and engineering, with over a dozen publications. He and his co-founder, George Harris, are brothers who grew up in the Philadelphia region.
