Abstract: Acid equilibrium is a fundamental chemistry concepts that is taught in general chemistry and threaded through later chemistry courses. It is essential that students have knowledge of acid-base models, acid strength, equilibrium, Ka, and pKa, to comprehend this area fully and apply these concepts to solve chemistry problems across different contexts. Our qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with students enrolled across general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry courses. Students’ reasoning of these acid equilibrium concepts was elicited via interviews using open-ended questions and various problem-solving tasks. The findings of this work and the implications for teaching and future research will be discussed. |
