Ultrasound-sensitive Microbubbles for Improving Diagnosis and Therapy

Ultrasound contrast agents are gas-filled microbubbles that enhance ultrasound backscatter. Clinically, the diagnostic role of these agents continues to expand due to their excellent safety profiles and cost effectiveness. In addition, the nonlinear properties of these agents have led to a wide variety of research applications.

This talk will summarize future microbubble applications with an emphasis on current research at Thomas Jefferson University. Specific topics will include the use of volumetric contrast-enhanced ultrasound in interventional oncology, noninvasive pressure estimation, localized drug delivery, and harnessing microbubble-based bioeffects for augmenting therapy.  

John Eisenbrey, PhD is an Associate Professor of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA. He is a senior member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Dr. Eisenbrey serves as a scientific reviewer for 17 professional journals as well as a grant reviewer. He has published over 70 papers in peer reviewed journals and over 120 scientific abstracts.

Dr. Eisenbrey's research focuses primarily on the use of contrast-enhanced and nonlinear ultrasound in drug delivery and interventional oncology and is funded by the National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, private foundations, and several industrial partners.
