Physics Colloquium: Women in Physics: Why So Few?
Start Date: 11/15/2012Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 11/15/2012End Time: 4:30 PM

Event Description
The Department of Physics will host “Women in Physics: Why So Few?” with Dr. C. Megan Urry, Israel Munson Professor of Physics & Astronomy, Chair of the Department of Physics and Director of the Yale Center for Astronomy & Astrophysics, at Yale University, November 15, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Disque Hall, room 919 (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Many people agree there are too few women and minorities in science but disagree about why, and what to do about it. Fortunately, social science research has addressed this issue extensively. Dr. Urry will review gender statistics in different STEM (science, engineering, math and technology) fields, highlighting differences in critical points along the career path. She will describe some of the social science experiments on unconscious bias, including a recent study conducted on STEM faculty. Dr. Urry will conclude with a set of steps for improving gender equity in STEM fields.

The lecture is free and open to the Drexel community. For more information, email Dr. Gordon Richards at gtr@physics.drexel.edu.
