Civil Society Engagement Between Israelis and Palestinians: Is There a Future?
Start Date: 11/15/2016Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 11/15/2016End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description
The Judaic Studies Program and the Department of Global Studies and Modern Languages of Drexel University present “Civil Society Engagement Between Israelis and Palestinians: Is There a Future?,” a lecture by Ned Lazarus, PhD, visiting professor of international affairs, The George Washington University, and research director, Alliance for Middle East Peace. The event will include a musical interlude of Arabic and Hebrew songs by David’s Harp (Joseph Alpar, director, vocals, percussion; Brenda Alpar, keyboard; Cynthia Folio, flute; Nick Millevoi, guitar).

Civil society engagement between Israelis and Palestinians has been controversial, yet thousands of Arabs and Jews have worked together for years through grassroots initiatives that aspire to a more just, equal, and peaceful future. Today, joint work is increasingly challenging. After two decades of working on the ground and studying the field, Ned Lazarus asks whether there is a future for Israeli-Palestinian peace-building efforts in the volatile Middle East.

Ned Lazarus served for eight years as the Middle East Program Director for Seeds for Peace. Based in Jerusalem, he designed and directed dialogue programs for Israeli, Palestinian, Egyptian, and Jordanian youth. After pursuing graduate study in International Relations, he has continued to implement and evaluate projects on peace building and conflict mitigation.

Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies.
