End Date: 11/7/2012End Time: 2:30 PM

Event Description
The Judaic Studies Program and the Department of English and Philosophy present a lecture and booksigning by Nadia Kalman, author of The Cosmopolitans, called, “This is Killing Your Mother: How Nice Jewish Boys (and Girls) Decide to Disappoint Everyone and Become Writers.” We often hear of authors standing in opposition to society. Jewish authors also frequently find themselves in opposition to their own families, both in their choice of career and in their subject matter. Using her experience in creating The Cosmopolitans, novelist Nadia Kalman will discuss familial friction in the lives and work of Osip Mandelstam, Adrienne Rich, Philip Roth, and other writers, as well as speaking about her own experiences.

Nadia Kalman is a 2012-2013 Literature Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts. Her first novel, The Cosmopolitans (Livingston Press, December 2010), draws upon her family’s experiences as Soviet immigrants in suburban Connecticut. It won the Emerging Writer Award from Moment magazine and was a finalist for the Rohr Prize in Jewish Literature. Before becoming a writer, Nadia was a teacher and assistant principal in the New York City public schools. After the lecture, Ms. Kalman will sign copies of her novel, The Cosmopolitans.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Books will be sold by the Penn Book Center. Support for this event comes from the Louis and Bessie Stein Foundation, The Milton and Miriam Handler Foundation, and the Friends of Judaic Studies. For information:
