Dr. Tony Bates is considered by many to be one of the “founding fathers” of virtual learning as we know it today, was a founding staff member of the Open University in the United Kingdom in 1969. He spent 20 years innovating the use of electronic media in education before later becoming the Director of Distance Education and Technology at the University of British Columbia.
