Black Women, Social Movements and the History of Activism

Event Description
In the wake of a series of police shootings of young men and women, we have witnessed the formation of the Black Lives Matter social movement. This movement has galvanized the African American community to push for large-scale criminal justice, economic and political reforms, just as America’s first Black president leaves office.  Symbolically, the passing of the torch from a black presidency to a black social movement has returned the spotlight to the significant role of organizing and protests in the push for social justice for African Americans and other minority and disadvantaged groups throughout the United States.  Remembering the central role of grassroots organizers reveals the role that women of color have historically played in leading, sustaining, and creating the social movements necessary to change our society.

This panel discussion will explore the ways in which Black women and women of color generally have built social movements and it will look at how those social movements can and will evolve in the future in order to create a more just America.

Panelists are currently being confirmed. Please check back for the most up-to-date information.
