Event Description

Exhibition from April 4, 2017 through June 18, 2017. Howard Pyle, His Students & the Golden Age of American Illustration was an exhibition featuring oil paintings, works on paper, and accompanying artifacts that highlight the work of Howard Pyle, the father of American illustration, and the generation of celebrated illustrators he taught. Pyle was an instructor at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University) from 1894 to 1900. During his time at Drexel, Pyle taught many notable illustrators, including Maxfield Parrish, Frank E. Schoonover, and Harvey Dunn. He was also a pioneer in educating female illustrators, most notably “the Red Rose Girls”: Jessie Wilcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Violet Oakley.

The Pennoni Honors College of Drexel University was proud to bring this exhibit to the Paul Peck Alumni Center, where students, alumni, and the community can explore the University’s history, of which Howard Pyle plays a significant role. Through Pyle’s work, and that of his fellow storytellers, we are privileged to exhibit an exceptional collection of American illustration.

This exhibition was organized and curated by Judy Goffman Cutler, Laurence S. Cutler and the National Museum of American Illustration, Newport, RI, along with the American Illustrators Gallery, New York, NY.
