Dean's Seminar: "Developing Entomological Science While Chasing Aquatic Bugs: Nearly Two Decades of Exploration in Mongolia"

Mongolia, a vast country nestled between China and Russia, has the fastest growing economy in the world, yet nearly half the people still follow a traditional nomadic lifestyle. Despite this practice, Mongolia’s relatively pristine environment—particularly its freshwater quality, quantity and unique biological diversity—is being degraded by rapidly increasing urbanization, mining development, overgrazing of steppe pastures and global climate change.

In this talk, through photos and video, Jon Gelhaus, PhD, will transport you to Mongolia on a field expedition, focusing on sampling insects and assessing water quality. Aquatic insect diversity is used as an important assessment technique for monitoring water quality in many developed countries. Results from his studies, from discovery of new species to impacts of grazing, will be discussed.

This event is free and open to the Drexel community. Light refreshments will be served.
