Literacy Within Reach
Start Date: 4/9/2012 All Day
End Date: 5/4/2012

Event Description
The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery is proud to present the exhibition Literacy Within Reach, curated by Robert Bain of The Joysmith Gallery in Memphis, TN. It is brought to Drexel under the generous sponsorship of Drexel Board of Trustee's member Chuck Pennoni.
Artists share stories of the struggle for literacy from different generations in an effort to produce knowledge and a positive plan for the future through improved literacy. The collected work demonstrates the role that illiteracy plays in racial oppression.

Literacy Within Reach will be open from Monday April 9 through Friday, May 4 in the Pearlstein gallery. There will be an opening reception with introductions by Cheyney State curator Helena Domenic and Dr. Juan R. Baughn of JRB Education Consulting from 5-7 p.m., on Friday, April 13.

The exhibition has been travelling to various galleries including: Cheyney State University, The Rosa Parks Museum, and the Museum of Civil Rights in Memphis, and has been acclaimed by the Children’s Defense Fund. For many years it hung on the stage studio of the Cosby show. Artists in the exhibition include: James Pate, Brenda Joysmith, William Tolliver, and Jacob Lawrence, who have been accompanied by teachers and guest poets at many of the exhibitions, making literacy even more within reach.

Craig Holden Feinberg is a senior art director at UNISON in Washington D.C. and his work is focused on design and visual impact communication for social justice. He has conducted work with the World Health Organization, The United Colors of Benetton, International Council of Nurses and on countless social issues for obesity, freedom of the press and anti-smoking. The exhibtion will include work he has created over his career along with a talkback and student workshops.
