Fashion show of recycled materials transformed into wearable art!
For the fifth consecutive year, The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design will present the Garbage Gala, a mostly first-year fashion student competition. This year, for the first time the Gala will be on campus, May 19th 7:30pm – 9:30pm. The URBN Center Lobby will transform into a runway extravaganza where students will showcase their innovative looks, made from recycled, and repurposed materials. These garments are the result of a guided project given by Rashidah Salam and Lisa Sylvester in Design III, the last foundational course for design students. The students were given one month to explore and transform found materials, develop a concept, and craft the final looks. During this short period of time, our first-year students, through hard work and determination, demonstrated the level of rigor and creativity that is a corner stone of Westphal’s community. We are so proud of our first-year students and can’t wait to see their designs on the runway!
This year’s gala boasts 47 first-year fashion design students, along with third-year fashion design students who participated in the Goodwill sponsored Recycled Garment Project, team-taught with Fashion Design instructors Lisa Hayes and Rachel Skyma. Also, students from Wearable Sculpture, a course with ½ Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art students, and ½ Drexel students, team-taught by Sarah Steinwachs and Steve Nocella.
