Event Description
Obesity and malnutrition among vulnerable populations: looking beyond access and availability

Karen Florez, DrPH
Assistant professor
The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy

Dr. Flórez's research focuses on the sociocultural determinants of diet and diet-related diseases. Obesity and malnutrition continue to disproportionately affect certain populations, such as immigrants and ethnic/racial groups. Studies focusing on the policy efforts meant to eliminate disparities experienced by these groups regarding access and availability to healthier food have found mixed evidence with health outcomes such as obesity. What other socioeconomic factors might be important to curbing the obesity and malnutrition epidemic among vulnerable populations?
