Drexel University's College of Computing & Informatics REThink CS @ Drexel program is hosting a research poster showcase for ten high school and two-year college teachers ("REThink scholars”) working in pairs with faculty in Computer Science, Engineering and the Medical School this summer. Our scholars are working on the following projects:
- exploring how social media content feeds are manipulated using curation algorithms to present relevant content to users, as was recently done in the 2016 US Presidential election
- using Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy devices (non-invasive bands worn on the head which use infrared light to observe brain activity) to determine when the subject’s mind is wandering
- using wireless wearable bands with integrated RFID antennas to monitor the breathing patterns of sleeping babies
- image processing algorithms designed to normalize and correct colors in stained histology images, to aid in cancer diagnosis
- researching how visual, auditory, and cognitive distractions impair people when trying to do a task that requires concentration, which has important implications for distracted drivers
