“Why Are You Here? Increasing Intrinsic Motivation to Reduce Cheating”
The shift to online learning has spurred many instructors to focus on making cheating difficult. While redesigning Web and Mobile Application Development this summer, I instead focused on appealing to students' intrinsic motivation to learn, in an attempt to make cheating undesirable. This talk will describe what methods I tried, what worked and what didn't, and the role of grades and an academic education for a student population whose main interest is entering industry to escape student loan debt.
The CASTLE Pedagogical Happy Hour is a program hosted by the Center for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE) and sponsored by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The program features a current faculty member who will present a brief overview of an effective teaching strategy utilized in their classroom or laboratory. The presentations are then followed by audience Q&A and discussion.
