Welcome Ceremony and Pinning
Start Date: 9/16/2022Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 9/16/2022End Time: 4:00 PM

Event Description

This Ceremony is a long-standing tradition and our opportunity to welcome new students to the Dornsife School of Public Health.

The pinning ceremony was first instituted at the School nearly 21 years ago by the founding Dean and humanitarian, Dr. Jonathan Mann. Incoming students, faculty, and staff receive the school of public health pin.

Student Government Organization Officers will lead the new students in reciting the preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Charter of the World Health Organization as a reflection of the school’s commitment to social justice, our vision of health as a human right, and an important step that formally welcomes all new students into the field of public health.

The keynote speaker is Amal Bass, JD, Interim Co-Executive Director of Women’s Law Project. The Women's Law Project is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization that seeks to advance the rights of women, girls, and LGBTQ+ people in Pennsylvania and beyond. Amal provides legal representation and engages in public policy advocacy in a variety of areas, including pregnancy/caretaking discrimination and accommodation, Title IX athletic equity and sexual harassment, reproductive rights, and employment rights. She was chair of the Pennsylvania Campaign for Women’s Health, among Billy Penn’s “Who’s Next: Law,” a former co-chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Women’s Rights Committee and honored as one of the women leading the 175th legislative district in Pennsylvania. Amal received her BA from Yale College and her JD from Harvard Law School.

There will be an in-person and virtual audience.
