About Alba Martinez

Alba Martinez is a principal at Vanguard, responsible for leading Global Talent Acquisition. Previously, she led Vanguard Retail Services, which delivers client services and investing guidance to six million Vanguard investors and small businesses. She has also led Vanguard’s largest contact centers and the college savings business.

Ms. Martinez has held senior executive roles in the business, government, philanthropy, and human services sectors. Before joining Vanguard in 2008, she was president and chief executive officer of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. From 2000 to 2004, she worked for the citizens of Philadelphia as the commissioner of the Philadelphia Department of Human Services. She has served as executive director of Congreso de Latinos Unidos, a nationally recognized provider of bilingual/bicultural human services in Pennsylvania, and as campaign policy chair and transition co-chair for Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. Ms. Martinez began her career as a lawyer for the poor in Philadelphia. She remains active in the region as a volunteer and supporter of nonprofits focused on children, youth, and the arts. She is a board member of Taller Puertorriqueño, a Latino cultural center in Philadelphia.

Ms. Martinez holds degrees from Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Puerto Rico, and completed the Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 2018. She has received many awards for her community impact, including an honorary doctorate from Arcadia University, the University of Pennsylvania Fels School of Government Leadership for Results Award, the Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania Award, Philadelphia Business Journal’s Women of Distinction Award, the Rutgers Law School’s Mary Philbrook Public Interest Award, the Puerto Rican Week Festival’s Citizen of the Year Award, the Equality Forum’s Distinguished Service Award, and the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Fidelity Award.

About Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III

Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III served Drexel University as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for a decade, during which time he led the creation of the Kline School of Law. Before he came to Drexel, his legal career included service as Chief Deputy City Solicitor for the City of Philadelphia, which he has always called his “best job ever.” Mr. Oxholm established and endowed a fellowship program to enable a Kline School of Law student who is committed to serving in local government to work in the Philadelphia City Solicitor's Office during the summer between the second and third years of law school.

This will be the 14th year the $10,000 Oxholm Fellowship will be awarded.
