Event Description

Andrew J. Spieker, PhD, Associate Professor of Biostatistics, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Department of Biostatistics, will present "Causal strategies to identify the role of engagement in mobile health interventions."

Mobile health interventions to support patients managing chronic conditions such as diabetes have been shown in randomized controlled trials to improve glycemic control and self-reported distress-related outcomes. The interventions studied are becoming increasingly multi-faceted and interactive. Ultimately, there is variation in the degree to which study participants interact (i.e., engage); with this variation comes opportunities to develop statistical methods to understand the role of the engagement in driving overall benefit. In this talk, we explore different causal approaches including instrumental variable and mediation analysis. Our proposed methodology centers, in particular, on strong access monotonicity, a feature of the study design that ensures that the causal effects of interest are well defined.

Andrew Spieker is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His methodological interests focus on causal inference approaches to solve real-world problems including analysis of mobile health interventions and semi-parametric modeling of longitudinal outcomes. He also has longstanding collaborations in internal medicine, pediatric infectious diseases, and perinatal pharmacoepidemiology. Dr. Spieker also maintains active involvement in the development of Vanderbilt's graduate training program in biostatistics and enjoys teaching and mentoring students.
