Join the Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) program for their Health Equity Seminar series, a Drexel-wide forum to discuss exciting work and ideas related to health equity.
This monthly series includes Drexel-based and invited external speakers whose work is relevant to health disparities research, ranging from etiology to intervention and policy.
In March, attendees will hear from Loni Philip Tabb, PhD, associate professor in the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Dornsife.
Talk Title: "Spatial & spatial -temporal statistical methods and practices
around assessing health and social inequities – with an eye towards
informing policies"
Overview: Racial disparities in cardiovascular health (CVH) continue to remain a public health
concern in the United States. While there has been overall progress in the narrowing of the BlackWhite disparity in all-cause mortality for all ages from 33% in 1999 to 16% in 2015, disparities in CVH
remain with some widening. Over the past 2 decades, one of Healthy People’s overarching goals has
focused on disparities, with an emphasis on achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, and
improving the health of all Americans. In an effort to gauge attaining such goals as laid out by
initiatives like Healthy People 2020, innovative methods coupled with diverse observational cohorts
are required – which, in turn, help to produce the needed evidence to create more informed policies
as well as interventions.
This talk will highlight 2 such diverse cohorts sponsored by the NIH/NHLBI,
found in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and the Reasons for Geographical and
Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohorts – with an es.
