"Structural Engineering from the
Bottom-Up: Leveraging Polymers to
Strengthen Deficient Civil Infrastructure"
 
Abstract:
 
Physical civil infrastructure provides a strong foundation for a thriving economy and enhances the well-being of communities. Yet, due to severe underinvestment and years of neglect, the state of the American infrastructure is poor. Tatar Research Group develops and deploys innovative polymeric materials and construction methods that extend the service life of existing and new infrastructure, including buildings, bridges, roads, and utility pipelines. Following an introduction of the lab, this seminar will discuss applications of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite strengthening systems in concrete structures and legacy cast iron gas pipelines. The presentation will emphasize research on characterizing and engineering adhesive joints in the FRP systems to overcome durability challenges in harsh service environments, as these joints greatly impact system performance.
