Event Description
Emotions can sometimes get us off track from healthy eating. The holidays can be a particularly challenging time of year when it comes to food. A host of both positive and negative emotions can affect our eating. Eating can become a way to cope with or distract from our negative emotions, or to celebrate when we’re feeling good.
In this workshop, we will explore the relationship between emotions and eating. You will learn tools to help break the cycle of emotional eating, and establish new healthy patterns:
• Mindfulness—which involves observing our thoughts and feelings—can help us make empowered decisions, rather than respond to our feelings on “autopilot.”
• Intuitive eating can help us to slow down and tune into our body’s wisdom to guide our eating.
• Self-compassion can help us treat ourselves just like we would treat a loved one. Without the heavy baggage of self-criticism, we can then get back on track with our healthy eating goals.
Join us in learning how mindfulness, self-compassion and intuitive eating can be used to develop a peaceful and empowered relationship with emotions and food. Our presenters will be Dr Chwyl and Dr Sala from Drexel University.

Christina Chwyl is a clinical psychology doctoral candidate working under the mentorship of Dr. Evan Forman in the Weight Eating and Lifestyle Science Center. She treats patients with mood and eating concerns as a practicum student at the Penn Center for Weight and Eating Disorders. Her research interests focus on developing technology-delivered treatments and weight loss approaches that do not require calorie tracking. Prior to joining Drexel University, Christina received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Stanford University and worked as a research coordinator at Portland Psychotherapy.

Dr. Margaret Sala is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University, where she serves as Director of the Mindfulness, Eating Disorders, and Acceptance Lab (MEAL). She is a former postdoc at the Drexel WELL Center, where she worked under the supervision of Dr. Evan Forman. Her research is focused on developing mindfulness-based treatments for individuals with eating and weight disorders.
