Junior Scientist Workshop: What Do Plants Have to Say?
Start Date: 2/12/2022Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 2/12/2022End Time: 12:00 PM

Event Description

We know plants can’t talk, but how do they make their needs known? Although they may be quiet, plants still have plenty to say.

Learn to interpret the unique signals that plants send, from “Stay away!” to “Help me move!” Explore plant chemical defenses, as well as plant and animal interactions.

Examine Valentine’s Day flowers and fruits to discover all the ways that plants communicate with friends and foes. Enjoy a guided taste test of chocolate, peppers and other botanicals to find out just how good plants are at saying what they need to say.

Please bring a small snack and a filled reusable water bottle. Feel free to bring a botanical or plant natural history specimen from your own collection to show off, and we will provide everything else. At this time, masks are required in the museum for staff and guests.

Drop-off and check-in begin at 9:45 a.m. at the Academy’s 19th Street entrance. Please contact Mary Bailey, youth and family programs developer, at mvb45@drexel.edu.

Please note: Participants have the option to sample chocolate and sweet to hot peppers during this workshop. The program may not be suitable for children with food allergies or sensitivities. Please contact us to determine if this program is appropriate for your child.
