All are invited to join a virtual talk with Jonathan Lee, graduate student in the MA Fashion program at Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada. His research interest is East Asian fashion discourses intersecting decolonization.
Kei pou (qipao in Cantonese) or cheongsam, the oft-interchangeable style of dress has been labelled as the ‘Chinese national dress’ due to its appearance in Western media. However, the perception originally stems from colonial mindset lacking understanding to the diverse Chinese diaspora. Due to the 2020 legislation of National Security Law in Hong Kong, anything that is considered as subversion to the Central Government of PRC is penalized. As a result, the discourse surrounding Hong Kong’s ethnocultural identity and localization have become a sensitive topic – leading to the marginalization of Hong Kong’s local culture and its people across political, social, and cultural aspects of life.
