Control and Enhance Immune Cells with Precision Biomaterials

Details and Biosketch:
Xiao Huang received his PhD degree in Chemistry and Materials at UC Santa Barbara in 2016. There he achieved the spatial control of gene regulation in human embryonic stem cells through light-responsive nanomaterials. He is now a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Tejal Desai at UCSF, working at the interface between biomaterials and immune engineering. One highlight from his work is the development of a robust chemistry to surface-functionalize biocompatible materials with exquisite precision for applications in immune modulation. Using state-of-the-art imaging methods, he discovered new molecular mechanisms of tight junction remodeling stimulated by physical cues of biomaterials. He has published 7 first-authored papers in journals including Nat. Nanotechnol., Adv. Mater., and ACS Nano, etc., is a co-inventor on 2 pending patents, and has received fellowships from UCSF-PBBR, Li Foundation, and CIRM. He also received the 2022 BWF BioInterfaces Rising Star Award. His future research interest is to develop innovative engineering platforms and analytical methods to advance understanding and control of immunotherapies.
