African Americans and the U.S. Healthcare System: A History of Distrust
Start Date: 10/11/2023Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 10/11/2023End Time: 5:30 PM

Event Description

Join the Drexel Health Law Program as we officially kick off Vital Signs, our new discussion series on cutting-edge issues in health care and law, with a timely conversation about racial bias in U.S. health care.

Kim Gunter, Drexel Vice President and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer, will present her research on the roots of African American patients’ distrust in their health care providers. Through a series of compelling case studies, Ms. Gunter will show how providers often misunderstand the reasons for patient distrust. These stories highlight the critical links between privacy, consent, and trust in the patient-provider relationship and their centrality to both improving patient experiences and reducing racial health disparities.

Dr. Vanessa Ferrel, MD, MPH (Drexel University College of Medicine), Jamie Rahn Ballay, LAW ’09, (HHS Office of Civil Rights, Mid-Atlantic Region), and Carla Carter (HHS Office of Civil Rights, Mid-Atlantic Region) will serve as discussants.

The program offers 1.5 Ethics CLE credits and the program is free of charge.
