The Dean’s Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Anti-Racism (IDEA) is excited to welcome Dr. Elizabeth “Dori” Tunstall to campus this October for a mini-residency on Decolonizing Design & the Arts. Dr. Tunstall is a design anthropologist, researcher, academic leader, writer, and educator. Until this year, she held the position of Dean, Faculty of Design at OCAD University in Toronto, Canada: the first Black Dean of a design college anywhere. She has taught and lectured all over the globe, solidifying her reputation as a leading voice in design anthropology.
Dr. Tunstall’s Drexel residency on October 5 & 6, 2023, is curated to support professional and curriculum development for Westphal faculty and staff, as well as to make her work accessible to the wider Drexel and design communities. The culmination of Dr. Tunstall’s visit is the delivery of the inaugural William Sidney Pittman Distinguished Lecture and the presentation of the Pittman Prize for Visionary Leadership in IDEA. The Pittman Prize is named in honor of iconic architect William Sidney Pittman, the first Black graduate of Drexel University, and in recognition of the vast contributions of global changemakers in the field of media arts and design. As the inaugural recipient, Dr. Tunstall will be the first to receive the Pittman Jewel, a bespoke jewelry piece designed and handcrafted by Westphal student Hanako Chen, ‘25, Entertainment and Arts Management major
