Looking Back to Move Forward: A Frank Conversation in Commemoration of Juneteenth
Start Date: 6/16/2021Start Time: 11:00 AM
End Date: 6/16/2021End Time: 12:00 PM

Event Description
In honor of Juneteenth and with a deep commitment to foster understanding and support for racial justice, the Office of Equality and Diversity and the Center for Black Culture are hosting a panel discussion in partnership with departments across the University as part of our Frank Conversation series. Click here to RSVP via Zoom.

As we look back to move forward, panelists will reflect on the racial climate in America since the George Floyd killing and how these events have influenced their work, leadership, and commitment to social justice and equity. The discussion will also address how the University and society can stay hopeful for the future in the aftermath of the Chauvin trial and verdict.

Erwan Terrien, PhD, adjunct professor of Africana Studies, will kick off the discussion with a brief history of the Juneteenth Holiday, considered the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration marking the end of slavery in the United States, and what makes this holiday important/relevant today. Shardé Johnson, director of the Center for Black Culture, will wrap up the event with resources about how to get/stay involved.
