Neuromodulation Technologies and Transcranial Ultrasound Brain Stimulation

This talk will include two parts: (1) a state-of-the-art review of different modulation techniques aimed at brain stimulation. In this tutorial session, technologies that include DBS, tDCS, rTMS, and optogenetics will be introduced, covering the basic principles and their applications in both clinical and experimental research. (2) In the 2nd session, we are going to focus on low intensity pulse transcranial ultrasound stimulation (LIPUS). As a new brain stimulation technology, LIPUS has attracted more and more attention for its merits of noninvasiveness, high spatial resolution, and good penetration through the scalp. This talk will present our experimental studies on neuroprotection of acute ischemia stroke, as well as the antidepressant effect of LIPUS based in rodent models.

Shanbao Tong, PhD, received the BS degree in radio technology from Xi'an Jiao Tong University (Xi'an, China) in 1995, and the MS degree in turbine machine engineering and PhD degree in biomedical engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1998 and 2002, respectively. From 2000-2001, Dr. Tong was a research trainee at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. From 2002-2005, he had postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His PhD dissertation was on EEG signal processing in brain injury following cardiac arrest, and was awarded one of the top 100 distinguished PhD dissertations of China (2004). Dr. Tong joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University as associate professor in 2005 and has been full professor since 2009. He established the neural engineering laboratory there, with research interests that include multimodal neuroimaging techniques and brain rehabilitation, as well as transcranial ultrasound stimulation.

Dr. Tong is the founding chair of the IEEE EMBS Shanghai chapter, which was awarded the Best New Chapter of IEEE EMBS (2013). He is also the founding chair of the IEEE EMBS international summer school of neural engineering. Dr. Tong was previously the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. He is now an active Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, Deputy Editor of Medical & Biological Engineering & Computation, board member of the Chinese society of neural engineering and the Chinese society for bioelectronics. He has served many IEEE EMBS conferences as session chair or co-chair (EMBC since 2005), international program committee (NER '13), or organization committee (NER '15), the conference chair of the 2017 IEEE EMBS international conference of neural engineering (NER '17).
