Natura feminae: Pursuing Science Against the Odds
Start Date: 3/17/2021Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 3/17/2021End Time: 5:00 PM

Event Description

Join an Academy librarian and archivist to dive into the collections and showcase the ways in which women propelled the natural sciences forward, against all odds.

Beyond the typical challenges faced by modern female scientists, women seeking careers in the natural sciences in the 19th century had to overcome immense barriers. Explore four female naturalists who faced unique challenges to realize their dreams and contribute to important research.

During this event, you'll enjoy a live look into the Academy's Library Collection through the naturalist illustrations of Sarah Bowdich Lee (1791–1856) and Anna Maria Hussey (1805–1853). You'll see archival collections from plant physiologist Dr. Ida Augusta Keller (1866–1932) and botanist Elizabeth G. Britton (1858–1934).
