Physics Colloquium: Network analysis of student classroom activities in physics
Start Date: 4/6/2023Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 4/6/2023End Time: 5:00 PM

Event Description

Join us on April 6th for our first Spring Colloquium of 2023! Guest Speaker Dr. Jesper Bruun, will join us from the Department of Science Education at the University of Copenhagen.

Abstract: Classroom observations protocols have been used to gauge the types of actions made by students and teachers in classrooms. Analyses based on protocol observations have been used in middle and high school settings as well as university settings to summarize and classify teaching. We argue that encoding and portraying observations of student and teacher actions in networks, may expand the use of observation protocols to capture the dynamics of teaching. This talk will illustrate how we encode video observations to network maps, and show examples of two network maps that depict different teaching dynamics. The talk will also present different ways to compare teaching situations, thus potentially leading to network based classifications of teaching situations.

Our observations come from a Danish project (2019-2022), The Base on Mars (Marsbasen in Danish), in which we developed and investigated high school physics teaching. The talk will briefly present the project and the underlying ideas.
